Dou 42 Original - Opinions

Another Dou 42 has appeared and presented itself for potential adoption. Everything on it looks good to me...except the numbers on the rear sight base.

The font looks off to me. Its a beautiful rifle that's in high condition. Just wanted some sharp eyes. Guy wont budge off 3.5K

Can you post photos of the front sight you mentioned.

The last two numbers ‘08’ do look a bit different than the first ‘47’, however the wear is consistent.

While the floor plate screws show lots of turning wear, the rear sight screw does not.

While the rear sight base numbers look weird, that wouldn’t stop me (though the price will). No bolt pics provided to confirm it’s okay...

Dou to me has the "goofiest" looking font of all the makers. I think that all the numbers that we can see are legit. Including the sight components. That price is awful steep though.

Whew!! . . .
$3500, eh?
I remember when these K98’s were stuffed in wooden barrels and could be had for LESS than $40!

Looks good to me!

Dou 42 98Ks typically had the serial number stamped transversely on the stock keel well forward of the butt plate.

100% agreed on this. I've got a DOU 43 f-block bolt m/m that I fretted over for years because of this. The numbers on the bands look exactly like hte ones here.

I trusted it when I got it for two major reasons: 1) I got it as an honest bolt m/m for bolt m/m prices back when those were relatively cheap (2009 or so) and 2) I got it off a member in good standing here with a good reputation. Even so, I was squinting at those barrel bands for a long time and it was mostly the fact that I couldn't figure someone trying to screw with band numbers and not change the bolt that made me just shrug and roll with it. Eventually I got Bob's CD and yep, good example right in there that matched mine.

It's not even the goofiness of the fonts, it's the inconsistency. With most makers there's a pretty specific font that you can spot across the gun. Not so much with DOU.

Based on a good bolt I own, that bolt numbering is terrible! Wrong font and has suffix. Referring to the gun broker bolt!
