I've got a dot 43 Russian Capture. Was looking for a bit of info/help on it. I know the Russians took them all apart and put them back together with different parts and such. But I was wondering, both my stock and receiver have matching numbers, 1106, is this rare to have or do most stocks and receivers match? (the other parts, as usual, don't match)

Welcome to the board! If by matching stock you mean it has a horizontal stamped # that is the same as the receiver, the Russians did that during the rebuilds. To get one with the original matching stock would be like hiting the lottery twice in a row.

yea the stock is 1106 and the receiver is also 1106. I wasn't sure if it was rare to get them matching. The other parts are numbered differently.

also, does anyone have any advice on how to remove the shellac and paint on a RC?

and, I'm looking for a wrap around butt plate as mine is flat and I think it doesn't really match for the year.

and finally, doe anyone have any parts numbered 1106?

There will likely be other serial numbers in the barrel channels of the stock and upper hand guard. These are the original German srial numbers.

One popular school of thought is to leave it in it's RC configuration unless the shellac is peeling badly, especially since returning it to it's original condition will be very difficult and likely not cost effective.

Denatured alcohol (from Home Depot) makes the black paint and shellac literally dissolve before your eyes. It is very easy to do. Then finish the stock with boiled linseed oil. It will look and smell awesome! I plan to post pics of my new dou once I put a few more coats of BLO on it.

yea, part of me has thought about leaving it in RC condition, but nothing will change the fact that it is an RC rifle and served on the Eastern Front. Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Avoid using abrasives at all cost on that stock. You can peel the old shellac off with a plastic putty knife and what it doesn't get the denatured alcohol will. Home Depot is NOT the only place that sells denatured alcohol, support your local paint or hardware store and leave the morons at Home Depot alone.

I'm not going to touch it with anything harder than a cloth, even if it takes me a year and 10 gallons of denatured alcohol. And yea, I stay away from the big boxes as much as possible, when I'm in the states that is.

Finished

here are some pics of the finished product.

Does anyone know anything about this sunburst on the back of the stock? I've heard the East Germans did that. Possible that it was sent to East Germany from Russia?
