Can i not just use 0000 steel wool? I know the finish isn't original but I don't really want to remove it and do all thatThis one's past the point where you need to worry about any original finish. You should however use Jasco followed by lacquer thinner and a toothbrush to strip all of that glossy stuff off and use a The German made Schaft Oil to finish it.
That’s what I would do.Can i not just use 0000 steel wool? I know the finish isn't original but I don't really want to remove it and do all that
$4700? Is that really the hammer price?
ok what's swjXEs?, could i just use a little denatured alcohol?I wouldn't use steel wool on any wood it will knock down any remaining grain and give it an overpolished look due to the low spots still being filled. swjXEs approach is likely to give a more *original look.
Alright I'll waitHow about you just wait until you get the rifle in hand, and then decide on what to do depending on what the finish looks like in person.
swjXe suggested cleaning it with thinner, then followed by:

Often you can cut the gloss by merely wiping the stock down with solvent on a rag. Usually methanol is enough. How do i just remove the gloss without removing the actual finish?
would denatured alcohol also work?Often you can cut the gloss by merely wiping the stock down with solvent on a rag. Usually methanol is enough.
Depends what the finish is....would denatured alcohol also work?
alright thanks, I asked the seller what the finish is and he hasn't respondedIf the finish is varnish or oil based usually acetone will remove it
If the finish is shellac or lacquer based denatured alcohol will remove it. Both of the above substances are safe for the wood.
If the finish is polyurethane based then good luck! There will be a lot of cussing and pretty much nothing will completely remove it all without some wood coming with it.
It looks like it may be tru oil which would be good news for removal but I could easily be wrong from the photos. Its easy enough to test once you get it.alright thanks, I asked the seller what the finish is and he hasn't responded
I want to achieve the look on the rock island link i posted, that rifle isn't refinished and I want mine to resemble that, and I especially want to remove the glossy look it has to it, I don't really know what I'm doing and I'm open to just completely refinishing the rifle down to the walnut and then using blo maybe? I've seen some videos and I think i like the look. But if I'm able to just remove the gloss with steel wool or denatured alcohol that would be nice, I've just read mixed things and I'm not sure if that would completely work. Basically I'll do whatever I can do to make it look like the one in the picI'm suprised at the replies here. OP, what are you trying to achieve? Whatever it is on the rifle, are trying to get down to bare walnut? The stock looks walnut, and had decent color, at least from the pictures you posted. I may dull it a little with alcohol, or 000 steel wool like you mentioned, but I actually like the tone it has.
So, what is your end goal?
For example, below is a before and after of a walnut repro stock I have. Are you trying to get to the bare wood like the first picture below? Even if you do, what is your next step after that? The second picture shows a finish with mixture of oil and walnut dye.
