Death by death head

Saw this gun today. This is not a gun I am planning to buy, just want to learn. A very credible source gave this an “OOF” 🤣. I have yet to see one of these that everyone agreed was legitimate.

1. What is the story behind these death head mausers?

2. How do you know this one is/isn’t fake?

3. This gun was listed for $11,500! No joke!IMG_9162.jpeg

Without even looking at the pictures.... $11500. Why not $50k? Or $500k? Dude needs to put the crack pipe down.
Based on the racks, it's the death head rifle from collectors firearms in Tx. One of our members who collects SS stuff use to own it and it is a real rifle but 11,500 for a mismatch example is not a appropriate price for it.

Would that be "Colfire" on Gunbroker? I have giggled at some prices asked from some of their offerings. Definitely a few legitimate specimens in the mix but the prices are many times a bit silly.

Yeah this one has been discussed. Legit barreled receiver but that’s it. Price is laughable but much of Collector’s stuff is. Every once in a while there is a gem to be found, especially since they’ve begun taking consignments. I know from speaking with some of their people that the consignment managers are not pushy when it comes to setting prices. Therefore, those looking for a quick sale sometimes price their stuff on the low end.

Just saw this one on GB. Different seller, but death's head on the stock. I am also not a collector and wanting to learn. Lot's of pictures of the rifle in and out of the stock.

Here is the description
"FOR SALE or TRADE! This listing is for a Mauser K98 BYF (Mauser-Werke AG) Bolt Action Rifle Chambered in 8mm Mauser Serial Number 50333. This fine rifle has been in a Private Collection of WWII items for a very long time, it is one of the finest examples there is in the country. We took a lot of photos showing every part of the rifle, please look them over well and if you have any questions feel free to email us and we will try to answer them to the best of our knowledge. The rifle itself is in original most all numbers matching condition right down to the firing pin, all internals, and cleaning rod (see photos), the condition of the internals is excellent showing minimal wear and normal signs of use. The only parts we see that are not serialized exact are the Floor Plate/Guard which are 9333 instead of 0333 we believe it to be a Factory Error as the history of this rifle can be traced back to the 1950s where it has been in a collection never touched..and the odds of finding a serialized plate that close in the same original condition as the rest of the rifle are all but unheard of. There are NO IMPORT markings anywhere on the rifle and it is spotless inside and out as our Gunsmith meticulously went through this entire rifle to photograph it for this listing. All of the stampings and lettering on this rifle are crisp and easy to read. The wood has no cracking and aside from some normal dings and handling marks it is as nice as they come, numbers matching. The photos show some oil on the rifle and internals as we did photos as it was being detailed for this listing. This rifle can be seen in person at our Showroom of Fine Firearms located in Grand Forks ND, we are open weekdays to the public and weekends by appointment. If you have been looking for a near perfect example of a German K98 SS rifle you will probably never find one nicer. "
