Today was amazing.

I attended the DACA show in Dallas today and met up with pzjgr and Bob Weiss. I have to give the highest possible compliments to these gentlemen and many others I met at the show such as Jack Sinz and his father, they are giants of integrity and helpfulness and were very patient with my rookie questions and concerns. pzjgr helped me located a stunning k98k which I was very happy to purchase and will be adding pics below. I also looked around the show and found a killer deal on an M48. I went back to pzjgr to get his advise on what to look for. I went back to the M48, looked it over inside and out, talked to the gentleman and was sold, M48 went home with me along side the K98k...one of the best gun show experiences i've had.

The K98K (paid $650 even though pzjgr tried working his magic before I showed up to lower it to 600 but I felt very generous and paid sticker price).

That sounds like a great time. I wish I lived closer to some members of this forum. You have two great additions there. Congratulations.

Looks like you are off to a good start! Careful. There is no known cure for Mauser-itus. Ask me how I know.....

I think your off to a very good start and not a bad looking K98k to start your K98k collecting. Once you get some more knowledge about these rifles under your belt you will be able to find that all matching untouched rifle for less then $600 one day!

Micah, it was great to meet you, and I am very happy we were able to get you set up with your first 98k...it was serendipity that Bob found me around 8:45 and told me John had one he was looking to sell.

Its a good, solid, honest 98k, perfect for what you were looking for.

Kind of an odd duck...the metal basically all matches, except for the front band and safety. The bolt is the matching bolt, although someone in the past seems to have pimp shined the bolt body only a bit. The safety as said is mismatched, but everything else matches the gun (well, I didn't take the bolt apart so don't know on the firing pin).

The stock is a MO stock, probably 37, 38, 39 timeframe, judging by the Nazi Eagle on top, and the Weimar's below. Oddly the front band matches the stock. I though it weird that somehow the matching rear band stayed with the rifle...

In any case glad we got you set up.

Have a good time in Brazil! Let me know when you are back, and the next show you'll be able to hit...I have that Yugo sling for your M48 set aside for you...

Youre not kidding about that, my main interest in collecting is Finn/Russian Mosins, somehow my Mauser collection has grown larger than the mosins...sneaky bastards keep coming home with me

Micah,
* Enjoyed meeting you last weekend.
* Hope you are enjoying your 1st M98k. Had to find you one still covered in dried grease (cosmolene?) so you can disassemble, clean, learn, record(?), and appreciate the genius of the Mauser design.
* Message me when you get the itch to try out/reload some 8mm. I'm in your contacts.

Thank you! I have already seen another Mauser, a BRNO at Cabelas today for $699 and an M48 for $500...neither one looked very good nor had matching serials. ... but that M48 had a bolt slicker than snot on a door knob.

Thank you sir and I hope to repay the favor BIG TIME one day, somehow. Tomorrow will be my first time shooting with the Mausers, I picked up some PPU at Cabelas. I'm very happy to have the K98 and glad I also picked up the M48 if for no other reason to compare the two. WOW, the quality control, fit and finish is vastly different. I think the extractor on the M48 is bowed, it sure seems to drag a LOT on it and it pretty stiff to rotate when closing the bolt. I also noticed the rear sight is noticeable misaligned and not inline with the centerline of the rifle, the flip up portion of the sight is all that is off from what I can tell so i'll find a replacement for it and maybe another extractor while i'm at it. I've completely disassembled both rifles, cleaned them in mineral spirits, then next in lacquer thinner, tooth brushing each part while in their respective solutions. I then sprayed the dickens out of them with Rem. oil. Reassembly with Slip 2000 and TW25B grease where applicable. The M48 has the best trigger i've seen outside of my Geissele Super 700 two stage trigger set at 2lbs.

I'll see how they shoot tomorrow and report back.

Hey Bob!

Yes, same here, very glad to meet ya and yes I'm absolutely loving and enjoying the Mauser, it's every bit of what I was hoping for and more. I can literally feel the history when I hold it, very cool feeling indeed. I did see some dried cosmoline but it wasn't much. I did break it all down and do a detail cleaning, I can now visualize each step in my head. The engineering is staggering, absolutely beautiful fit and finish in the design.

I have see two displays for reloading since the DACA show and I think about when I will be contacting you to start the reloading process. I have bought a 60 rounds of "Prvi Partizan PPU 8mm Mauser SP 196grn" and 200 rounds of "Prvi Partizan 200 Grain FMJ Match Ammo - PPM8". I'm hoping they can be used for reloading. I'll save all the brass in anticipation.

First trip out shooting the Mausers went great! I was shooting at a 2/3 IPSC steel target at 100 yards, the K98 hit like a sledgehammer tipped laser beam, broke the center flapper off and severely damaging the hinge. I had to make zero sight corrections. Recoil was totally acceptable and I had zero malfunctions. I AM IN LOVE WITH MAUSERS! The M48 as expected had more issues, the sights were in desperate need of adjusting and the bolt was still quite tight to operate. I am sure the extractor is incorrect for this rifle or has been highly ground improperly and then bent, causing undo friction at top groove and lower on the outer bolt housing. A discernable groove is forming in the polished bolt surface. I have saved all my brass so far and will be contacting Bob about reloading soon. Once I get more range time in I'll post groups on paper to see what the K98 can do, then later on with the M48.
