Curious BYF43 Mauser - Humped?

Hello All,

I’m considering dipping my toe into the Mauser space after getting engrossed in Lugers. I have the opportunity to pick up this dubious ‘43 Mauser-Werke at a fair price, but I have some questions concerning the barrel and bolt.

The barrel is lacking a visible eagle over globe firing proof and barrel code. The stock appears to be yugo captured and does not match the gun. Strangely, the bolt body is primarily in the white and it seems to have been buffed to a decent degree. The serials on the bolt match the numbers on receiver, trigger guard, and floorplate. The buttplate is corroded and does not show outward markings.

I am going to take it out of the stock today and see if there are hidden barrel markings, but I’m afraid it is a modern reproduction as the bore is incredibly shiny and crisp. I would love to hear the opinions of this knowledgeable community concerning this interesting midwar Mauser.

Thanks,

Nothing humped about it, just a rifle that has seen a few different hands.

I bet it was a sporter with a completely different barrel/stock on it before. That’s why all the barrel and stock hardware is mismatched. The only original things left are all part of the receiver grouping. And the bolt being polished white (not professionally either) supports this.

Having said that, I think your assessment is pretty spot on all around. Bolt (looks original) and receiver bridge definitely hit with an abrasive of some kind. The barrel is not original, it’s improperly marked and it would have a bore diameter marking like 7.92 just in front of the receiver on a factory barrel. And no final acceptance or serial etc. are present.

You’d be good to check if it’s even an 8mm bore still. If so, a good shooter/beater in the 500-600 dollar range.

Thanks for the response. Shame to see the barrel was replaced, but it is what it is. I will be able to get it for $700 which I think is decently fair. Let me know if my value assessment is off.

700 is close enough. Not bad for a range toy. Headspace it and check the bore diameter BEFORE YOU SHOOT IT. Should be 7.92mm or .323
