Cool Gewehr 98 sniper photograph

Thank you Absolut! This is a great photo of that mount. I will include it on this post so others can see. I have not seen this mount type even in books. Always something new to learn here.
Good thread.
Also worth noting, while the stock is not relieved for the bolt, the bolt handle is similar to a Kar89a with a flat on the underside. The bolt is matched to the rifle.

Bottom photo clearly shows another “hunting” rifle pressed into military service, such rifles in these photos look to have brass tags on the bottom of the stock. Great thread.

I might throw in (and I don't know better and would appreciate if @Amberg can confirm or deny what I'm just saying) as a very rough rule - the Bavarian Gew98 sniper rifles do NOT have the stock bolt handle milling whereas the Prussian Gew98 sniper rifles seem to have them. The rifle in the Royal Armouries seems to be a Bavarian contract rifle, at least the mismatching scope surely is (note the Bavarian elevation markings).

PS: pictures of bottom of the rifle indicate the stock is matching numbers too.

can confirm
confirmed. ;)

When the hunting rifles were returned to the previous owners from 1916 on, the original tag was removed and a new one as "certificate of thanks" inletted into the stock.
But not many found their way home. :(
On the attached photo you can clearly see where the original tag was removed. The military "serial#" (D 2159) and "KM" is faintly visible too.

Oh yeah, I also saw that great rifle on the forum being posted. Did you manage to buy the rifle from him? Or is he not willing to sell? Too bad the scope got swapped.
