If the bands and stock are mismatched then you really can’t be sure that it’s commonwealth gun. Someone could’ve slapped an action into a stock they found. I would verify that before purchasing.

Good catch. That usually means “restored sporter.” Let’s see if the stock matches…

Well I can tell you the handguard, bands, bayo lug, butt plate do not. I had a chance to check it out. I didn’t remove the barreled receiver from the stock though.

Well the stock and fittings are from a '40 or possibly '41 MO rifle. Looks like 1238b.

Would a rifle that went through one of those countries be proof inspected on the receiver also?
I think HB had posted one a while back.
I agree with a restored sporter with the shaved hand guard retaining clip. There are guys that can weld a doner clip on with minimal damage to the bluing, but you would be able to tell.

I believe I read on this forum that an asterisk was added near the serial number on the receiver of a commonwealth capture. This one does not have it.

Perhaps difficult to locate but would it be “cleaner” to locate an e/214 marked rear sight base and replace it?

I don't know the original barreled action is a Commonwealth capture, but rather the stock is.

I would tend to agree with finding a e/214 RSB and swapping over all the other sight parts. The grinding from cutting off the lip is pretty bad on the original. Not sure how rare that part is in the wild.

The are soldered on and a PIA to get off at times and will discolor the blue from heating it. If you can find someone to weld a lip on yours from a doner base that will keep the parts numbered to the rifle.
