CE 42

Hello experts.

Since last I asked, the market for matching K98s has been dry. Finally, a new possibility has shown itself, this time as a CE 42. Does it look fine or has it been messed with? Hope you can help me.

Not enough photos to make an assessment. Photos of every single marked and serialized part are needed.
These are unfortunately all that are available. I have no doubt that all serials are matching since it's a reputable seller, I just need to know if the stock or anything shown looks odd.

It looks fine from the provided photos, but never just go off the fact that a seller is "reputable". I've seen plenty of reputable sellers sell rifles that were humped/not correct.... It's not necessarily their fault, but many overlook things. Not all milsurp/gun guys are well versed enough specifically in the 98k to spot red flags. I'd always want to see every inch of a gun before just being told that everything matches. The only time I'd personally take the chance is if the rifle was being sold by one of a few guys here on the forum.

The seller sent me this picture of the crown, looks like there is still some left. Would you take the chance for $1200?

No. not if you plan to shoot it.
Looks to me like the bullet sits too far into the muzzle for the end of the bore to be any good, AND it isn't even pushed in all the way, notice how it is shifted to the right in the pic? If it were pushed in all the way it'd be in almost to the case neck. THAT'S not a good photo of the crown, you want to be able to see the whole 'mouth' of the muzzle, from an angle slightly above the muzzle, and showing the curvature of the crown radius. By comparison, I put a PPU round into the muzzle of my project sniper rifle (brand new barrel) & it sits 1/4" from crown to case mouth, about twice what's in the pic you posted. Rifles cleaned a lot w/ steel rod, or in gritty environments tend to show a lot of wear in the last 2" or so of the barrel. Irrelevant on a collector piece, but ruins a shooter. (if you like to hit the target) There may be other factors to consider for you, but I would pass.

It will be a safe queen, so I am not so worried about accuracy, however, you are right in that the picture does not tell much. I think I will call the seller tomorrow, and offer to pay for additional pictures of the serials and a better crown picture.

so then in that case, if the pix are satisfactory & most important components match, doesn’t seem like too bad a price. A rare code/year with shooting issues isn’t a bad buy, if you want it for its’ collectability, rather than its function. Really nice rifles probably shouldn’t be shot, to preserve them.

$1200 is below retail... if a matched example. Buy it, but ask for a bolt & band pics before sending funds, and ask for the customary 3 day inspection
