BYF 45, Matching, Vet Owned

While visiting a life-long friend today, he showed me this rifle that belonged to his grandfather who has since passed away. As a kid, he said it had been hanging on his grandfather's wall for as long as he could remember. He did not know anything about it other than his grandfather had brought it back from WWII. I thought it looked all original with some interesting notations, i.e. the bolt with the S/42 and stock cup being black. I didn't even ask if he would consider selling it, but I offered to clean it for him. I told him I would here for the merits of the rifle, and the value for insurance purposes.

Thoughts are welcome.

Well, the stock and bands should not be numbered on this gun, I suspect postwar west German use rather than some kind of fakery. I have seen rifles numbered by them after the war. That does not mean he didn’t bring it back in 1946 or 47.

interesting as I cant say Ive seen another numbered like this.. Sure looks old and keep it for what it is.. The buttplate looks blued or painted and thats a no no also .

I'm with mrfarb. I don't like this rifle as a ww2 bring back, but I like it alot as a post war rework.

I agree! The stock is really cool and shouldn't be dorked with. The whole rifle is cool. Nice postwar reworks like this have always been hard to find.
