Byf 44 L block Stock Mismatch?

Well, I thought I would be safe in buying what I thought was a correct byf 44 L block only to find to my surprise that the stock was numbered "20758". The thing throwing me for a loop was the fact that the stock has a phosphate recoil lug, cleaning rod nut, and bayonet lug, which I thought was only introduced in late (December) 1944. The rest of the rifle is consistent with L block features and numbering with unnumbered bands and handguard. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know but is there any chance of this being a reuse of an older stock on MO's part or just a really well put together mismatch?

Only other markings present on the stock are these internal inspection markings in the sling cut out and a "7" that appears stamped just ahead of the magazine housing. There is also a wooden dowel present in the bolt handle cutout which I found rather unusual for a K98k.

This is always one of my concerns when buying a rifle that appears “matching” from the outside.

This one would’ve surprised me too.

Stock is from a Norwegian capture, cut at front of mag well for the longer guard (and that 7 stamp and dowel repair too). Imo wa135 looks suspect as well - someone’s resto project.

Thanks for the info! I thought I'd be safer going with a later war but wasn't able to pull the action out if the stock since the seller had these on consignment. Will probably be taking this one back on Monday. Makes me worried about this one byf 43 I found that I'm looking at.

Yeah, this one caught me off guard. Looks like I'm bringing my screwdriver set whenever I go back out to look at this collection again.

Well, managed to return the byf 44 today and warned the seller of what it was. I got to pull apart the byf 43 and confirmed the stock and handguard were matching on that but this collection I'm looking at is looking like a minefield of mismatches and some fakes mixed in. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some pics of the '43 up soon, looking like the most honest of the bunch from what I can tell (unless you guys see anything that says otherwise).
