I like the barrel step! Instead of a smooth taper like on mine (3569T) yours just has an abrupt step. Never noticed that before. Its crazy how much rougher the finish on your rifle is compared to mine as well, only a few hundred apart.
I just noticed that. The little quirks like that are fascinating to me.

Does anyone know what may have caused the small stains on the stock? They seem very old. Oil? Blood? Bad wood?

I cannot say for certain what the staining may be, but is is not high velocity spatter, nor is it transfer, pooling, casting, or running which is often associated with blood. It does appear to be a a low impact dripping stain. Additionally, the color is not too dark like blood, but that is not always the case.

BTW, very nice example. Interesting cutout for the bolt.

I like it. A lot of these late ones have the odd size laminate wood hand guards.
