Beautiful Amberg Mod 71 Rifle

Hi all,

I picked this one up the other day and wanted to share. It's a common (for 71 standards) maker, but the condition was hard to pass up. So many of these are gray or abused. This one is more like the condition you normally find 71/84s in.

In any case, it;s a matching 1883 Amberg unit marked (oddly) to the 2nd Bavarian Foot Artillery Regt. 4th Company. I have seen others with artillery markings and would assume that this was due to weapon scarcity early on in WW1.

Rather whacky right stock acceptance too (like they flipped the die and re-stamped when they realized it)

Thanks for looking,

I never get tired of seeing these! I pretty much ignored these until Craig stimulated an interest in them for me... he had a way about him, he had such a broad understanding of the variations and understood the continuity between them all. They do not make collectors (or men) like him these days.

While recording it I saw these late rifles all are from the same unit, yours being the second highest recorded. But I am sure you reviewed the trends already. It is a very nice example, you did very well!

Simply a lovely specimen
Thanks Marc! I appreciate the heads up on this one!

Thanks Paul, I'm with you there-- I started the hobby by buying a lot of RC k98k (as many probably did) I was a bit too intimidated to buy a matching k98k with all the skullduggery at the time, so I jumped back into imperial stuff. I bought a beater 71/84 and caught an appreciation for the black powder mausers. My stretch goal is to complete a maker set for M71 rifles one day, but the odds of finding the Suhl makers, Sömmerda, and Birmingham are going to be stacked against me.

The unit assignment trends are interesting. These are about the furthest thing from an artillery carbine (I think only my m41 Dreyse is longer), but I guess beggars can't be choosers!

Great looking 1871 Chris. The condition of your rifle looks excellent. Mine was built-in the same year as yours. Don't quote me on this because I could be wrong. I think my 1871 was built 1,700 rifles before yours. Anyways well done Chris. Another gorgeous rifle added to the collection.

Chris, I've got an Amberg too (1877), similar unit mark. What I can't identify are these random "1" stamps and a letter combo. Any ideas?

I am glad you chose to go Imperial, you have taken it further in a shorter time than anyone else I know, even Jordan, who has made amazing progress. I agree that completing a full set of M71 will be a serious challenge, some only a short handful are known. However I can think of no one better up to the challenge, I bet you will fill that set!

Thank you for the kind words Paul, I appreciate the help and observations along the way!

Hey Chris i just got a 1871 mauser, with the same Regiment, but 6th Kompanie do you suspect it was a WW1 used rifle based on the unit, or is there something else at play
