I think that is a small "C" on underside of stock.
Was hoping the shroud was "7 - bottom half of an eight - 7 -5" but I think it is 7075

Could just as easily have been capture pile damage. We have all seen pictures of the piles, the thrown out of the back of trucks, tossed into half barrels of diesel for cleaning, how many times were they hit, mishandled, piled again, stacked, damage occurring each time? Just like rusty pitted bores, my guess is most of the damage seen was after surrender.

There's period news reels of K98ks being slung up into the backs of trucks in piles, tossed into piles, etc. Sometimes if you look at stock prangs and dings you can see that it happened that way, impacting another rifle muzzle or buttplate, etc.
