Rifle looks pretty good to me for a bolt mismatch. I did notice the cross bolt has been removed atleast once before, you can tell where whatever tool they used scrapped the wood. If you get the rifle Id be sure that cross bolt is tight before firing or it will damage the stock.

John.

Looks righteous to my eyes. Bolt is a Gustloff subcontractor special too and only 847 off?

Thanks John. I wasn't sure what had happened there.

And I did notice that on the bolt. For a b/m seemed pretty cool with numbers so close and same letter block.
I think I'm pretty happy with this purchase.

For me that's as good as it gets short of a 100% factory matching. Bolt from same manufacturer, same block with a similar color/patina. Hard to do much better.

Very nice! Wouldn't have been surprised if this one had a duffle cut.

I think a lot of US close bolt mismatches happened shortly after capture when a GI picked a souvenir rifle off of one pile and a bolt off of another. I have just such a bolt mismatch, captured by my uncle at the surrender of the Brittany port of St. Nazaire at war's end in 1945. He picked up a dou 42 98k rifle, sn. 5235b, and then found a bolt for it. The bolt appears to be dou as well, sn. 7344b. My theory is that the unit that surrendered had been equipped with a large batch of dou 42 rifles at some point.

My uncle then disassembled the rifle, crated it, and shipped it home to my great grandfather. When my grandmother passed, I came into possession of the rifle. I thought maybe my uncle would like it back for his son, my cousin, but I have it to this day, along with a M1935 helmet, dienstglas binoculars, gas mask, and a pair of field phones that still work.

Talk about some cool stuff!! No duffle cut on this piece. Maybe it was something that was shipped back as well.

That’s one nice looking rifle! I like the “e” bayonet lug. Very cool.
