BCD 4 3 Hole 6362

Hello, Fairly new to the forum and I have a rifle to share. It appears there is some documentation going on here of legit examples, of which I believe this is so I figured I'd make a post and will link it in the LSR sticky above. I have read Law's books on the K98k + Sniper variants and that is about the extent of my knowledge of Sniper variations on K98's. Recently while visiting a friend of the family he showed me this rifle and asked that I find/fix some missing pieces for it. He said "Yeah I've got a German Sniper rifle..." to which I thought in my head "Yeah sure you and everyone else that has a WWII bolt action rifle..." but to my surprise he pulled this out of the safe. I have been doing some research in the last week or two regarding this and as near as I can tell these were captured "In-process" in the factory before optics/mounts were fitted.

The stock has no serial number in the barrel channel and only what looks like a "0" on the butt. It was duffle cut, poorly, unfortunately with the cut piece missing. I will be splicing another stock's bayonet lug to this one. They cut it about 1/4" behind the bayonet lug. Unfortunately they also started sawing at the pistol grip so there is a small slot cut there, too. Nothing structural but for sure not pretty. As such there is no bayonet lug, no lower band, and no handguard. My intent is to repair this as minimally as possible to make it look like a K98 again.

As near as I can tell the shroud and cocking piece has a "6" misplaced for a "5". In collecting Lugers I am usually the first one to call B.S. on "Factory mistakes" but this does appear to be such a thing. I'd be curious to hear what some more experienced collectors think.

Thanks for looking and thanks for any info. If there's anything else I should be looking for please let me know. Myself and my friend are curious, as I posted on another members' thread earlier today about the same sort of rifle, as to what the ballpark value of these rifles is. I don't think there's any desire to cash out on it, but I am considering working out a deal to buy it from my friend (I collect German and Swiss stuff, especially Swiss sniper rifles, he just buys guns :D ) and I'd like for it to be a fair exchange.

Very very cool! This makes 3 hole rifle number three! Good luck on getting it repaired! :)
Your BYF 41 is gorgeous btw! Hopefully I'll find one someday and be able to have one along side my CE41

Thank you for sharing the rifle with us. I hope that it will remain a three hole rifle and not will be completed to a LSR sniper rifle.

The stock appears as if a straight cut under the lower barrel band [area] would be the best choice - then adding a front end. Would make it look like a duffle cut that had been repaired.

Thanks! Yeah once I get all my ducks in a row I'll determine if it'll be better to splice in just the bayonet lug or just replace the whole front section. It very well might be the whole section, as this one has been pretty chewed up by just having the front band holding the barrel to the stock.

I see no benefit whatsoever to drilling pin holes.

Well the stock I ordered was not as described... lol (sometimes you need reminders that this is real life). It was supposed to be a laminate stock but was a cupped butt Oberndorf (probably '41, WaA655 on the cross bolt) walnut stock. I'd probably end up spending more than it was worth in shipping playing the return game so I just used it. Stock was split in multiple places with extra sling swivels bolted on etc.. a good surrogate for piece parts. I ended up just replacing the bayonet lug area on this in order to leave open the option to do a larger replacement down the road if the right piece of laminate shows itself.

Filed in a dovetail and used a piece of stainless tubing through the cleaning rod hole. Not the cleanest work I've ever done but the base pieces weren't in the greatest shape either.

Letting glue set up, hopefully will be able to do a complete assembly tomorrow.

I think it's a great rifle. Better than my 3 hole actually. However, it's almost like these 3 hole guns are cursed or something. I would definitely use the right piece of wood to fix this. There's a guy on here who would probably hook you up with proper lumber. You definitely have great repair skills, but hopefully this can be undone. I mean this with all due respect. With the value of these guns increasing I think you might want to reconsider this repair.

I definitely will re-do it in the future if the proper piece is found. Like I said this left open the opportunity to do a typical duffle cut repair down the road.

With the right tools everything can be un-done ;) In your opinion would it be better to do the same replacement with a late-war laminate vs. a complete front-end (forward of the lower band)?
