Hello, Fairly new to the forum and I have a rifle to share. It appears there is some documentation going on here of legit examples, of which I believe this is so I figured I'd make a post and will link it in the LSR sticky above. I have read Law's books on the K98k + Sniper variants and that is about the extent of my knowledge of Sniper variations on K98's. Recently while visiting a friend of the family he showed me this rifle and asked that I find/fix some missing pieces for it. He said "Yeah I've got a German Sniper rifle..." to which I thought in my head "Yeah sure you and everyone else that has a WWII bolt action rifle..." but to my surprise he pulled this out of the safe. I have been doing some research in the last week or two regarding this and as near as I can tell these were captured "In-process" in the factory before optics/mounts were fitted.
The stock has no serial number in the barrel channel and only what looks like a "0" on the butt. It was duffle cut, poorly, unfortunately with the cut piece missing. I will be splicing another stock's bayonet lug to this one. They cut it about 1/4" behind the bayonet lug. Unfortunately they also started sawing at the pistol grip so there is a small slot cut there, too. Nothing structural but for sure not pretty. As such there is no bayonet lug, no lower band, and no handguard. My intent is to repair this as minimally as possible to make it look like a K98 again.
As near as I can tell the shroud and cocking piece has a "6" misplaced for a "5". In collecting Lugers I am usually the first one to call B.S. on "Factory mistakes" but this does appear to be such a thing. I'd be curious to hear what some more experienced collectors think.
Thanks for looking and thanks for any info. If there's anything else I should be looking for please let me know. Myself and my friend are curious, as I posted on another members' thread earlier today about the same sort of rifle, as to what the ballpark value of these rifles is. I don't think there's any desire to cash out on it, but I am considering working out a deal to buy it from my friend (I collect German and Swiss stuff, especially Swiss sniper rifles, he just buys guns ) and I'd like for it to be a fair exchange.
