Any chance this ISN'T a turd?

Define Turd in this case? It’s a totally mismatched Russian capture (X mark above serial, importer applied receiver serial) - I think I sold that trigger guard somewhere a long time ago. So some parts pieces together later to make it look more correct.

Basically a real SSZZA4 but import marked Russian Capture resto. $3500? Amazing what people will spend.

Thanks for the reply Farb. Given the exponential interest in anything SS I am trying to sort out how to tell the legit from the fake markers just to better educate myself. I look at that stamp and it's roughness says "fake" to me. So, obviously I'm incorrect in that. School me if willing.

It’s speculation, but these SSZZA4 stamps started out perfectly crisp, but maybe they were not hardened properly they and started to deteriorate with use - the “earliest” suspected use of the stamp shows perfect symmetry and completeness. The stamps quickly begin to look like they had to take broken pieces and cobble them together to keep using them. Some of the last ones are missing the “bird” completely and only show the sszza4. You really have to ignore the sszza4 stamp somewhat and look at the rest of the evidence to accept the rifle, such as the serial fonts, components used, stamp location. It’s like anything, there are specific patterns to follow. I put much of this info in Volume 2 SS chapter.

I was focused on the stamping to test my ability to put research into practice regardless of the rest of the rifle and no intent to consider for purchase. Crazy price even with a legit SS heritage. I was unsure of the stamp.

Its funny as of 2 days ago, this gun sold again on gunbroker after so many non paying bidders. This is the 3rd time its been relisted….
