Another 1901 DWM Naval / KM Gew.98, 1st Werft Division (Kiel)

Here's another Naval Gew98, this one to the 1st Werft Division (Kiel). It's matching less the bolt. It came with a m/m (non Naval) bolt and I swapped that out with an armorer's bolt that the patina matched better. Also attached is a pic of my original Naval mütze to the I.W.D.

I was just able to file this one, ran out of time yesterday... this rifle Mike has never posted before, all I had were the GB sale pics which were deplorable... anyway, I noticed in the text of the sale that the rifle reportedly came out of "Tanzania which was German East Africa" according to the seller, which I though interesting if true.

Mike got a damn good deal on this rifle too!

Yes, they're tough to locate. I've got a '15 Spandau rework that's got a Naval 1st Seebattaillon I.D. disk (I.S.B 1111). The stock is not otherwise Naval but the disk has been in the stock for a long time, as the wood is "proud" around the disk.

I've also got a nice un-dinked-with early KM/Naval stock (with hardware) to the 1st Torpedo Abteilung (I.T.A 876). I've been trying to locate an early Naval DWM receiver/barrel to put a gewehr together, as I've got a spare naval bolt & triggerguard assembly.

Hi there sorry to jack the thread, but I have come across this naval advertised piece and wondered what your thoughts were ?
I have looked at comparisons and can't seem to see any acceptance marks on the receiver (maybe covered in grime) .
Is this possibly a normal G98 action and barrel in a naval stock ?

Why not start another thread instead of "jacking" this thread? FYI, you're going to have to show a lot more pics for an evaluation....

Looks Navy to me 1902 would very much be in the naval range. The markings on these are light strikes. I bet you could see them under the surface oxidation/grime with a conservative cleaning.

I don't see any issues off hand. i'd gamble with those 4 pics depending on price. We need a full set for a real evaluation though.

Apologies, just thought of continuity as both about naval G98's, both DWM. I will start a new thread

If you need more information on the naval contracts please check out my research thread on these. There's a lot more information in there to help you. Located at the top of the Imperial section main page. From what I can see the rifle does look promising it's in the same letter block range as my navel rifle dwm 1902.

Paul that part of your statement about German East Africa is probably true. I did some digging. There could have been small elements of the 1st Werft Division that participated in the 1905-06 Maji-Maji Rebellion in German East Africa. "The light cruiser SMS Bussard, assisted the Schutztruppe by ferrying troops up and down the coast of German East Africa to the rebellious areas. Landing parties of sailors from the ship were also used to secure the ports. Later the light cruisers SMS Thetis and SMS Seeadler were sent to German East Africa as reinforcements."

MichaelWC what is the source of the quote in your last post please? I would like to learn more about the 1st Werft Division.

I was reading this from two sources. The first source I was reading I accidentally read the wrong information it wasn't about 1st werft division but the shipyard at Kiel. So that is my mistake. My second source was correct. My second was his website. http://www.germancolonialuniforms.co.uk/hist navy.htm
From that link I did read and find out there was naval personnel landing parties during the rebellion. Were the landing parties part of 1st Werft Division? I am not 100% sure yet. Could they have been maybe or maybe not. I have a couple other books I need to skim through to see if I can find any more information. I get back to you about this.
