Ammunition

What do you recommend that I buy for ammunition for my 1944 byf? There seem to be a lot of choices and brands.
I need some help.

Any 8mm Mauser you can find Surplus is nice if you dont mind corrosive ammo buy other wise if im not shooting my Yugo surplus or hand loads, PPU.

PPU is really good ammunition and it's reloadable too the only downside I would say is it's underpowered from what the normal 7.92x57 Mauser load is. The main reason for that is because it's also fired in the 1888 commission rifles.

The best military surplus ammunition out there for these rifles has got to be the Portuguese stuff from the 70s but that ammunition as well dried up by now. I only got a little bit of it left and hell I don't even want to shoot it sometimes. The Yugoslavian M75 cartridge is another excellent round to use as well.

PPU is an awesome soft load for 8mm. For surplus Romanian is loaded to WW2 german spec if not a little softer. Yugo is a next runner up. I have a listing in the forum trader for Turkish 8mm if you would be interested. Its hot stuff as i mentioned in the listing

The FMJ BT bullet from PPU mimicks the sS Geschoss.

Guys, what makes you say that PPU manufactured ammo is underpowered, compared with period ammo ?

I attach specs from Polte for the sS Patrone.

I created a thread about shooting matters in the FAQ section. Happy to continue the discussion there.

Where does one find this ammunition? Who sells it?

Gunbroker is probably your only bet. PPU 8mm is sold out everywhere. Even ammo seek barely lists a page of 8mm and most is either steel cased, surplus, or match grade.

best one IMO

Yes, I saw that, and the prices start at a buck a round and go up from there! I don’t mind paying but I would prefer a known entity to deal with, not some back-woods outfit.

I sure miss Interarmco!

Found this for two hundred bucks. Opinions?

YUGO MILITARY SURPLUS - 7.92X57 MM (8 MAUSER) - 196 GRAIN FULL METAL JACKET - 200 ROUNDS W/ AMMO CAN

I don’t need that many. I’m not starting a war!

There is no more Yugo (Yugoslavia) for last 20. years. Serbia makes PPU ammunition...

Glad I didn’t have that attitude 5 or 6 yrs ago when I bought a case of 900rds for $150. That’s 16 cents a rd might I say.

200 rounds isn't a whole lot. 5 range trips, 40 rounds each....

It's always like this during election years as far as I can remember with ammo availability. I always stock up on reloading supplies during these years. Even for the lowly 8mm.
