Ammo for Danzig 1917 Gew98

I inherited a Danzig 1917 Gew 98 Mauser rifle. The gun smith checked it out, barrel, action, etc.... and confirmed 8mm ammo can be used but he can't recommend a type. Just wondering what anyone else has used in this or similar rifles.
Appreciate the help.

Old ww1 Gew 98 had a light ball s patrone which was around 154 grains I believe. So if you can find turkish surplus, that's about as close as you're gonna get (correct me if I'm wrong).

Commercially,
The Romanian 170 grain, Sellier & Belliot 196 grn FMJ are my top pics (as they are hot loaded and closer to what they were sighted for).
Hornady makes a good 8mm match load also, but it'll hurt your wallet.

You can also get into reloading if you save the brass.

Brass will always be smoother, but if your chamber isn't badly out of shape and cleaned really well, steel case should work fine. Otherwise you might get sticky bolt.

For reloading stick with PPU clean stuff but under-powered. Common ammo too find though and reasonably priced.

For the military loads I like the Greek ammo, M75 Yugo, and the Portuguese.

Stay away from the Hotshot brand plain junk. Turkish ammo is ok but the stuff I have ran across is hot.
