I'm asking if that is a reject proof IE. Reject stock. I'm asking a question

Not shooting this down,

Ahh gotcha, sorry about the misunderstanding. The asterisk in this case denotes an outside supplier of the component to Oberndorf.

Thanks Jory!

There are ways to do it

Thanks Clay,
You've made my point. Some rifles deserve restoration work, but not just anyone should do it.
I know not everyone agrees with this. If such work was performed on this svw45, it was tastefully done indeed!

Woahr what a ton of replies, didn't expect that. To answer a few things:

When I look at the terribly deep pitting near the front band. I have to believe that to remove that much corrosion that there would have to be a refinish involved. I'm probably wrong, but would like to hear other opinions. :sorry:
I have been under the impression that the very rough surface is a result of a sintered front band. At least I've been told the very rough finish of my byf45 with the ZF41 scope is a result of this. See here: http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?41976-byf45-with-ZF41&p=309614&viewfull=1#post309614 . But others are more knowledgeable on surface of sintered bands than I am, so you might be correct. In case you were speaking of the pitting on the barrel in the front band area, I honestly have no clue. Maybe these pittings were already there when finished. After all it is a 44 dating barrel, this late in 1945 - maybe originally rejected but then used up nevertheless? The barrel btw is mirror bright on the inside.

The wood appears to be cleaned. up lightly and some finish added
I cannot concur with this. The stamps are very crisp and sharp and would had been gone if it was cleaned and refinished. It has a very rough finish outside, you can see the file marks from production, and the stock is extremely oversized compared to the buttplate. I attach a picture showing the WaA135 stamp in the stock I did with my mobile phone, maybe this will make you change your mind. Also it doesn't feel like it had been oiled.

I think I see a faint “byf” on the floorplate, maybe George can confirm.
Yes, floorplate is byf marked with an additional 135 under it. Sorry, didn't notice this is not visible in the pictures.

I agree - not so sure it’s cleaned/oiled - seen plenty of C stocks like this and could easily be normal patina. If I picked it up I wouldn’t touch the wood. Love the late MO guns with C stocks!

Thanks guys,
I guess I need more experience interpreting photos. I'm happy that I was wrong about the wood. :happy0180:

Pitting on the barrel

That heavy pitting on the barrel is due to corrosion and not due to any material or manufacturing issues.
That is classic rust pitting which is very evident from the images.

Enlarge the image of the takedown disk... inside the tube that locks the left and right discs to the stock is not some bright red rust still present... I suspect that there was a lot more of this on the gun at one time and the metal has been gently cleaned - and the tube interior was ignored or mostly left alone thus preserving the rusted surface of the metal.

I agree, This rifle has been exposed to some serious moisture for some time and has had a few barnacles cleaned up as well as possible. You can also tell this by the rust staining peeking out from under the bands. Amazing that the stock held up as well as it did. The red glue seems far superior to the white.

As written in starting post I was selling this rifle. It has 44 on the outside, as visible in the starting post. Sorry I can't tell you more.

Yes, thanks. Thought you might have the remainder as well ....
