‘44 byf at Legacy: Opinions?

New to the forum and to the K98. I know there are some low opinions of Legacy Collectibles here on the forum, but I’m interested in some feedback on this ‘44 byf. Obviously it’s overpriced, so I’m curious what a fair market value would be on this gun, and if it shows any signs of force matching or other forms of desecration. Thanks y’all

To me it looks like he accidentally let a nice rifle slip through, as long as you don't have issues with the dufflebag cut.
He says the stock has been sanded, but I don't see any real evidence of it except at the duffel cut repair. No re stamped parts either.
In this current market I'm not sure the price is unrealistic.

He like most do get a decent rifle once in a while.. I applaud you for asking this question first instead of just buying it and asking how you did after. This is the one thing I have been trying to stress. I cant open the link but , seeing
the other comments Id be careful but at least Tom, has a rock solid return policy and even though he's often wrong he will admit to his mistakes if presented properly. Most items on dealers sites are overpriced and thats the business they are in to make money. Often time hundreds or hours are spend finding items and thousands spent travelling and doing shows ect just to pick up a few items so I get it.. You being the couch dwelling internet shopper dont have to spend days in cramped cars staying in crappy motels doing shows trying to find stuff. I get it some guys live for this and thats fine. There are two ways to buy for sure.

So I commend you for asking fist and not asking to pick your purchase apart after buying it...! Bad practice.. :(

Thanks for the input guys. Based on the input you’ve given me I’ve decided to take advantage of the 7 day inspection policy offered by Legacy. To that end I’ll post as many pics as possible once the gun shows up. Cheers!

Ok so the gun came home this afternoon and I was able to clean it up and take some pictures. Legacy’s link to the listing appears to be dead, so I’ll repost some of their pics as well.

I’m disappointed with the repair quality of the duffle cut… some wood glue and a dowel rod shoved in the cleaning rod hole. That will be addressed. But otherwise, any back info or knowledge you all can provide would be greatly appreciated

Actually, assuming no real damage under the middle band, that’s the kind of repair I would prefer to see, easy to redo correctly and much better than fixing a major botched up job.

The stock has a relatively rough finish to it. Conversely the upper handguard is more finely finished and has no markings inside. There’s a clear contrast between the two. Is this potentially correct for a 1944 semi-kriegsmodell?

Actually it's a good thing the repair came apart because now you can get that dowel out of the cleaning rod hole and repair the thing correctly.
It's not unusual to have a field replaced handguard, you can't be certain when it was replaced, but it's no big deal. All in all I'd say you came out of this deal relatively unscathed.

Ha one of the lucky ones I guess! Regarding the KM comment, the stock is a much rougher finish than that of other K98’s I’ve seen. Wasn’t sure why that was. Perhaps some overzealous sanding at some point.

The duffle cut should be an easy fix. Take out the dowel and get a section of 1/4 inch stainless brake line and go from the cleaning rod nut to the bayonet lug. Use a good epoxy and you’ll be good to go. The 1/4 inch brake line fits the existing cleaning rod hole perfectly, and the inside diameter is still large enough to allow a cleaning rod to pass through. I just fixed one myself.

Great idea, thank you!

The link was dead early on and I couldn't find it in the sold section which I thought was odd.. Was the duffle cut mentioned ? Also there was a pic sticky at one point here as to fixing a duffle cut with photos. The tubing is the way to go. Its all hidden under the band. Overall the rifle looks correct. If youre happy keep it if not send it back.. simple
