35 marking on P-38s

Thanks Ken, do you have any additional info or pictures of the example with it stamped on the receiver bottom? This is generally where assembly numbers are stamped but I can’t recall seeing an arbitrary assembly number higher than about the mid 20’s personally, so I don’t think that’s the case there.

Great stuff guys, thank you!! I can add that the 35 that appears on K98 triggers never has a rejection mark or asterisk with it, but also it’s always the ONLY marking on the trigger. Never a WaA or anything else.

I wish I had kept all of the instances I have seen this mark in one place, its a treasure hunt. Here's a few, both on SS gew conversions.

Mike, I don’t know if this is an example in hand, but does it appear like a prior inspection is obliterated on the sight base, kind of to the effect that many commercial rifles exhibit obliterated inspections there?

You saw a post that mentioned them, but there were no solid suggestions about what it meant or who it belonged to. The fact that it has appeared OVER-stamping some other markings, and that it appears sometimes near an asterisk, led some P-38 collectors to believe that “35” was a cancellation mark, but that doesn’t make sense to me. That would require one inspector passing the part and another rejecting it, and then it goes in a pistol ANYWAY??

The “35” on triggers is always alone, comes in two different types, and so far as I see never has any other markings on the trigger with it at all.

I asked because I was not sure if it was the same pistol or if another one turned up and yes they could not identify it, Glad some folks have identified this specific number on other firearms and the connection centers around Walther's/Suhl, safe to say its not a post war mark

Right, I’m quite sure it’s a wartime marking and it’s not SUPER rare in the P-38 world but it is considerably more rare on K-98s. Hopefully by identifying everywhere we can find it we can draw some more definite conclusions about it.
