1944 DOU Russian Capture - Good First K98k?

Interesting mine is also a CDI and an MO. I started calling them 'handsome RCs'. The shellac is pretty nice (not over sawdust or dirt) and they don't have that awful (IMHO) 'stove black' finish. Yours certainly appears to fit that bill.

By the "stove black" do you mean that nasty paint? I've got a bit of that on my RC (which is otherwise really top grade - not even an "X" stamp) but on a few small parts. I don't have anything concrete to base this on, but I suspect it was a touch-up for guns that got dinged in storage. For me it's on the floorplate, and when I rubbed some off with a thumbnail I found a decent gouge/scratch under it. Obviously no way to know for sure, but it looks about right for what you'd get whanging another guns' front sight against the mag plate.

Mine also had the nasty shellac, peeled off every which way, to the point that I stripped it because I was tired of coming home from shooting covered in shellac flakes. Anecdotally it feels like the shellac tended to stay put on the hardwood stocks better than the laminates.

Yeah there's an awful black finish that's blotchy and also can be easily removed or smeared if you use the wrong cleaning fluid. Also I've seen besides different levels of defacing (seems like yours and mine got minimal) but also stock sanding and finishing. You said your finish was bad and you removed it but I saw how sharp the edges were on your stock. Honestly I've seen stock that looked like someone ran them with 36 grit on a longboard. Brutal

BUY IT if at or under $750.(y):giggle: Great barrel, nice stock, an intact RC with added cleaning rod and capture screws.
Just got it home for $500 out the door. Based on the replies here I think I made the right choice to impulse buy this one - I've made mistakes in the past doing that. The bore looks better in person, stock is in great shape with no shellac peeling, action is smooth, and no black paint just dark dip-blued from what I can tell.

Now I just need to find a good place to pick up a sling and take it to the range. Thanks everyone!

Outstanding. Looks pretty nice. Bore looks quite good. Are the swazis punched out on this? I can't tell. Sometimes they did it so slickly unless you looked really close you wouldn't notice.

It doesn't look like they are punched out to me but I honestly don't have much experience with them to tell for sure. I tried to take as clear of a photo as possible. Do these look like what you would expect to see or punched out?

For 500 you got a deal. The RC's have pretty much dried up these days, and that one is in good shape. Back in the day, it was a thing to strip the shellac and rearrange parts, etc. I'd advise not to do that with yours. Leave it as rearsenaled/rebuilt by the russkies. They have their place in history.
Now for your next k98k!

Thief! I wish I could work magic like that. For that specimen of RC that was the deal of the year. AT the Front has nice reproduction slings (Two qualities) that some oil to darken- I use filthy lawn mower oil.

I like their best quality re enactment reproduction: but its $80 https://www.atthefront.com/product-p/gwk98t.htm

Or get a cheep Yugo k98 style sling. Originals are too nice for a shooter.

The great thing about the RCs is, except for the branded number on the stock. If you remove the clear coat (which is very easy with oven spray foam) mine has a very good looking k98 with over all well operating parts. I also own an RC and use it as a shooter. The hit pattern is very good even at over 100m.
