1940s Kar98 info needed

Hey there so I’m obviously new here, I’m more or a modern shooter, and gun enthusiast. But I have recently been enjoying a little taste of history. I found this at a gun shop. Paid for $1600. He said it’s all matching numbers but my concern is it looks like someone just scratched in the numbers to make it “matching” I was hoping someone with more knowledge could guide me. He also said he couldn’t find any import markings, as he was doing the paperwork. Not sure if that hurts or helpsIMG_6801.jpegIMG_6803.jpeg

Yea, so it's maybe a $1000 gun. Maybe.... Typical Russian capture mixmaster.

There is a picture reference thread sticky in this forum. Go there and look what a matching example of a k98k looks like and what that means.

Honestly…. Unless you have some nice parts on like a rare stock, it’s probably around $800-$900. Bore condition plays a role as well, at least to me.
Yeah, at $1600 you paid about double what the gun is worth, maybe a little less. Depends in part on what the receiver code is. There are ways you could come out OK in this, but frankly that is me just sticking in a weaselly little caveat because there is an extremely thin chance that it could be a rare code.

edit: missed the 1940 receiver date. Make that a vanishingly tiny, probably 0% chance.

edit: and chances are there is an import mark on it. Some got missed, but my guess is that it's one of the earlier imports with a more discrete mark than the Century Billboard. Try the barrel between the front band and the front sight, it might be relatively small font and lightly stamped.

Well I got beat down.. luckily it’s still just a cool gun that I can hang on my wall. It looks like it’s in pretty good shape, you can make out the Luftwaffe all over the gun. I was wondering why it was sitting there for a few months before I pulled the trigger.. ehh you win some you lose some

Yeah, this shite happens when you're new. If it makes you feel any better I did just about the exact same thing you did when I first started. A dishonest gun store guy who I trusted because he was the local dude who "knew" old guns sold me an "all matching" RC K98k for $300 back when they were $120 guns.

sometimes that ‘sitting around’ thing is a clue. my LGS had a Lithuanian model 98 similar to the prewar carbines. it was well worn, so i left it to do some research. (asking was $2k, a couple of years ago) a model 24L IIRC, similar to these:

some 24Ls have a fancy FN roll mark on the receiver, this one had ‘the Columns of Gediminas’ instead. it finally disappeared, i didn’t ask…..

as recently as 2-3 years ago, people would have laughed if you said “rcs will be selling for $1200-$1300 soon”. so if you keep this one & use it as a shooter & a way to learn about model 98s, whether or not you buy another ‘better’ example, in 5-10 years you may break even.

Good to know. It didn’t look “factory stamped” yeah I got my first lesson in older guns. Research first..
One thing I learned is to reach out to the folks in this forum BEFORE you purchase a rifle. Cost free learning experience. Once you've received feedback, you'll know what exactly what you're buying

Yep well like I said I did 0 research so a quick google said that’s what they were. Obviously I was looking at the wrong thing . Sorry
What do you mean by Luftwaffe? The eagles? Those have nothing to do with the Luftwaffe, those are a combination of firing proofs and waffenamts (inspection stamps). All K98k's left the factory with them showing that the rifle was fire tested and passed inspection.

It's all good, I thought you may have been looking at something else. When you get a chance, post more full photos of the rifle. Even though it's an RC, they have a history of their own!

Yeah so for some reason it’s saying file is too large and technology is really passing me by..
The forum has issues with large file size photos. We typically use a website such as tinypng.com to scale photos down. It's an extra step, but it works.

Darn nice looking rifle!

I ran into the same issue when I first uploaded pics. Found a quick & easy (and free) fix via a compression app.
