I know I’m kidding myself, but did the Germans ever paint there Bayonets and Scabbards black? The paint looks old and is done very well.

There has been some discussion about them possibly painting a scabbard (but not the whole bayonet) when the means to reblue were not available. But that is a thought only. I would say your bayonet was painted post war by a previous owner.

Some of the bayonet could be painted on the surface, when quickly repair of damage, problem would be here on rifle slot, as by painting there could be caused problem by tolerances, there is more real that this was not used on rifle as no signs on the pommel area and the paint is postwar as mentioned, it was done nicely, but on some small place You could proof to remove it and look under how to look the blueing, Coppel 1940 was normally nice blued with high glossy finish. Could be proofed with acetone or some nitro solution.

Bayonet update, I carefully removed the paint to reveal lots of wear, but I’m satisfied with it.

Looks better without the black paint on it. Granted a lot of the blue is gone, but not all of it. Lucky. On the S84/98 III bayonets that I have or had, that had paint on them, the blue is gone.
