1939 42 98k

i see only 4 photos... looks ok as far a what I can see . This one was rusty at some point and was cleaned up but the pitting is pretty bad. These are getting harder and harder to find so it all depends on what the asking price is.

On a 1939 Oberndorf, virtually every part including the cleaning rod would have been numbered with the full number or at least the last two digits.

Barrel, receiver, bolt, stock, floor plate, trigger guard, both barrel bands probably highest priority for matching numbers. Then receiver screws and all individual bolt parts.

Least important and seldom found, correctly numbered cleaning rod.

Those would be my order of importance, others may feel differently.

Good luck

What's the price for such a piece nowadays? I have seen prices around $1200-1700 for matching K98s.

Pretty much what runner said, pretty much everything was numbered and I think the band spring should have a Waffenamt E/63 as well. The sight hood is a later addition if I remember correctly. Don't forget to check the handguard serial if the seller will let you. The pitting should knock off some value but the more experienced here can give you a better idea of prices. Matching pre war K98ks don't come up all that often and condition will matter a lot for determining a fair price on one.

Those prices will get you a bolt mismatch. Full matching 98k's are over $2K now, with many examples closer to $3K. As mentioned that pitting will decrease value on the one you're looking at. I'd also ensure everything is actually matching. Your photo group is missing photos of virtually all serialized parts, especially the most important such as bolt, bands, etc. That's a red flag and I truly don't understand why sellers leave out that stuff.... Don't take the sellers word for it that it's matching either. I'd ask for more photos of ALL serial numbers. If you can get them and the numbers appear to "match", don't just assume they are factory original. These rifles are humped often and the inexperienced overlook this. All they see is "matching numbers". Post additional photos here if you can get them for further verification.
