Just want to make sure I'm not crazy or out of touch but $2700 is pretty high for a 1916 Gewehr 98 with a sling, right? Or did I miss something with this one aside from overall above average condition?

That was a little bit of an odd duck.

We couldn’t quite figure out the darkened receiver. Either way, too much for such a common Gew. $1700 Gewehr in my mind and $300 sling.

I did catch the darkened receiver, wasn't sure if someone had cold blued it or not. The recoil lug also shows signs that it was messed with. I was thinking about trying my luck on this one but definitely not at that price

Thanks for the input guys! Good to know that there will be other WMO 16s to look for, the search continues...

It doesn’t show any sign of a post war update. The receiver looks like somebody used Birchwood Casey cold blue on it. Especially with how faded it looks. The cold blue doesn’t like to stick a lot of the time.

Stock looks sanded to me also. Definitely cleaned/enhanced in some ways. Seems like a "gotta have it" syndrome. The price is survivable. I almost done goofed a lot worse than that in the past.

Jesus, need to put my WMO 16 out on the market if this is what they go for, lol.

I think I paid $500 for it ten years ago.

That "Gotta have it" syndrome really takes things to the moon in terms of price. I wish I could find Imperial rifles locally so I could avoid bidding wars online but there seems to be none in my area so online it is

Well, you can at least triple your "investment" by selling it to someone here ;)
