Jory's 16 VCS inspired me to do fresh photos and a data sheet on this guy. Here's another of Mike's rifles that he was good enough to pass into my care this year. I was starstruck on this one when I pulled it out of the gunsock after SOS. These are the rarer version of a cover and one of the reasons the rifle jumped out at me. The original strap is missing from the cover, but they always are.

I wrote a detailed post of the action covers, but didn't really get around to fully disassembling this one until now. It's a bit unfair, as this one is nothing short of lovely and I should have done this sooner.

Not too much to say here, as the rifle is a textbook, factory matching VCS. The only divergence is a pretty neat stock repair on the right side next to the recoil lug. The real showstopper is the general condition for a midwar and a Suhl in general.

Interesting, I've never seen a repair like that before on a Mauser. One has to wonder what happened to that stock to warrant such an interesting repair. Still, that's a great example of a VCS Gewehr 98! Also, browsing this forum has been torture for me with all these beautiful Gewehr 98s being posted. I'm trying to find one, stop reminding me of how much I want one!

That’s one’s really nice… Mike’s ex rifles just don’t disappoint. He had a great eye for a keeper! An interesting item on these VCS’s to me is the underside bolt flat by the front screw hole…. All the letters stamped in a very random fashion to my eye. I found this feature very interesting when I had my rifle apart and included a photo of it in my photo spread, glad you did as well. What’s your take?….. Some sort of internal control or inspection at VCS?

Thanks Jory! You nailed it, those are internal factory process inspections. While random to us, they had a meaning to the workers, but that has been lost to time.

I believe that stock repair at the recoil lug was done by Bill Reed. I looked through the notes in my notebook & didn't see anything though. I'm not 100% sure, too many years ago, lol.

Your use of light in these photos is just about perfect for accenting small details. I may have to enquire as to your set up. I tend to take too bright a shot. Very nice rifle and rare accessories. Well done, sir!

Interesting-- makes me wonder what caused the original damage. Either way, a minor wart on an otherwise beautiful face. Lol. Appreciate it again Mike!

It's not hard, nor expensive. I bought a set of soft boxes off Amazon and set them up by my workbench. I just take the photos with my phone. Every once in a while I turn up the brightness after the pics are taken. I believe Sam uses the same setup.the key is the filtered light from the soft boxes. No reflection and they are bright enough to kill shadows.
