Here are some pictures of my 1916 Mauser GEW 98m that I got at a farm auction, it is all matching except for the cleaning rod which is 35 instead of 65.

Holy Smokes! Awesome rifle. Gew98M's are one of my favorites.

Clearly a TR rework, or at least had more work done during the TR era. Can someone with more familiarity than me work read the depot acceptance on the bottom of the stock under the serial number?

Gw1--Güstrow is the HzA marking if memory serves. There's an Su(Spandau) mark on the wrist too.

The depot marking on the buttplate is imperial era for Depot #12(unknown)

Beautiful rifle Chuck!

Chuck allowed me to adopt this really cool 98m from him…. I am a going to add some photos of some items to this thread. It’s just a cool rifle with a lot of history. Couple things of note, the bayonet lug is numbered 62. I also took the action out of the wood and the hand guard is unnumbered. I took a couple photos of the hand guard/stock area and they really match well…. Do you guys believe that Güstrow would have installed the hand guard at the time of the rework with a reused example with the old numbers sanded out? The rifle is a really cool old war horse. I really dig the 98m’s… especially the ones that went threw a Nazi era depot…..

I wanted to do some comparisons before posting, but take larger-closer detailed pictures of the bolt, any markings; the rearsights base and stock acceptance (RR also - I know what it is but a good picture is a fact, not a good guess..)

I originally thought the bolt not factory, but I think it actually is as although I have my doubts, I think it is just the pictures, the acceptance and fonts look right for the range. The barrel is perfect and clearly factory, the stock is probably DWM originally, from what acceptance I can make out, the TD obviously postwar.

**Such a commonality probably denotes a blackrifle, one that was hidden but sometimes used to train irregulars (most paramilitary types - this was openly done and often on eastern estates or training areas), in 1926 or 1927 the head of the Reichsheer (Heye) reported the details to the government, though it probably was known by them, - such activities were often in Prussia and Prussian police proved a nuisance to such activities and hoards were often discovered (Prussia was rather left of center in the Republican era, - as was much of Germany before WWI and after... Germany was long one of the most "progressive", (socialist party, labor unions, welfare and old age care) states in Europe, which belies one of the greatest lies of modern history, that Germany was the cause of the Great War, nor was she the guiltiest (France, Austria, Serbia and Russia were all far more "guilty"), hell America was the cause of its prolongation... for without US credit and military aid it would have ended earlier as a negotiated peace instead of a diktat)

Anyway, do better pictures if you can, we have all the right angles already but their quality makes it more speculation than factual. A nice rifle either way, more typical G98M's have far fewer original parts in their make up (and rarely are HZa acceptance so clearly defined)

Ok here are the photos. Please let me know if you need something else, but I think these will answer all the grey areas for you. I look forward to your response….
