1916 DWM 98m EWB

Here is another cool 98m that I picked up from Chuck quite a while ago. He posted it years back…. I am reposting it with some out of the wood photos and more photos of the bolt. It’s a salty old war horse that’s all there I believe. It’s neat that it served in the EWB after WWI and also pretty cool that it was likely cut for a sight hood likely by a field armorer in WW2. The rifle also has a neat repair to the toe of the stock. As always please ask if you want to see something not photoed…. I will provide….

for auction is this original old world war 1 mauser 98, this gun is serial number 461h, gun is not modified in any way that i can see, just about every conceivable part is either stamped 461 or 61,there is a piece of wood patched into the toe of the stock, probably military repair, receiver is turning a brown patina, the barrel has most of the original blueing on top, underneath in the front, it is once again turning brown patina, has an original style military sling, has ewb etched into the buttstock, bore looks to have all of the rifling there, butt is very dark, could use a super scrub job, a great looking old world war one rifle,at a low reserve, buyer to pay actual shipping cost

i have been told that this may be a rework, something about the rear sight not being a roller coaster, i will include another close up of the rear sight tomorrow, it goes from 100-2000 meters, thanks

It looks like when it was possibly reworked that they took a center punch and marked them? Possibly to show they had been reinspected?

I have an 88, a 98M an s28 and a 98b with the punch marks. I think it was a practice at certain depots. I can't say I've ever seen anything definitive about it and I haven't researched it myself.

Even my SS/SSR has these punch marks. Just an observation, the punch seems to be associated with serial numbers containing “6”. Some convention they came up with to make sure it wasn’t read as “9”? IDK where found, they are only on a couple parts.

Those were the only auction pictures in the listing, its the same rifle, it did poorly because of the pictures. While a lot of good pictures might not generate a high return, too few almost always cause the end price to suffer.

Yes the test punch, very common. I do not know the technical purpose, but it is common on hardened parts (receivers, barrels, bolts); Mauserbill suggested it was a hardness test (if i remember correctly - my memory on such things is not always good), but I personally have no idea or proof or reference for the application. Need a technical dude for that, (I am a trender and compiler mostly- accumulating data and books to form a picture based upon subjective details and facts...)

This is likely the case. Looks like a Brinell Hardness test was conducted on certain parts to make sure they were heat treated right or were up to spec. There is almost no other way you could get a punch that deep with a hammer and a punch, unless the carbon content in the steel was next to none.

It’s hard to say what it is exactly until we have documentation. Any explanation we have is just a theory until we can actually prove what it is.

It looked like a brinell hardness test. In some spots, maybe they hit it twice to get a “good reading” so they didn’t have to scrap the part. But it could be something entirely different.

I always figured that checking hardness of the part with your center punch would keep you from flattening your nice number stamp set. If you flatten your center punch it's easy to re-sharpen it, not so easy to sharpen a number stamp.
