Hi all,

Here's one that came to me in a deal with another member out of the blue. It's nothing earth-shattering, but a pretty nice CGH all the same. It's fairly late for a 16 too; though I believe the Consortium went to the "v" block that year. It was the only maker I needed for a complete 1916 set, so that was nice.

The bolt and stock are factory, which is a nice thing and the condition is pretty good. The stock has what Sam likes to call "smushy" stamps, but has a nice look overall. The biggest detractor is that the bottom metal components (TG, FP, FP follower and screws) are MM. Hard to confirm when that happened, but they've been together a long time; my guess is long ago replaced stateside or sloppy depot replacement. Also, the rear band and handguard are mm.

The receiver seems like it might have been lightly cleaned at some point, but fairly conservative and no walnut shell blasting thankfully. lol.

Other than that, it's a pretty textbook Haenel with great finish remaining on the bands and barrel.

Great rifle! The last block for the Suhl consortium and the highest observed (also as nice as these get, Suhl consortium rifles rarely this nice or in upper grades...). All three (makers)are represented in the u-block of 1916, how they assigned serial ranges is still a mystery (to say the least, it boggles the mind figuring but they assuredly collectively serialed)

I think a case exists to say of the wartime G98 makers the Suhl consortium is difficult to beat for rarity - especially in matching upper grades. Very rare in upper grades and anything approaching matching.

**great pics too!

A nice pickup Chris if I do say so myself 😜 I am always attracted to that good wood... Your photos do such justice to this rifle. I'm glad it is in good hands!!

That's a very nice CG Haenel, congrats! That is a very nice stock on it too. I'd love to see your 1916 set of Gewehr 98s all together, bet that would be a fantastic grouping to see

Nice Haenel my friend! I am still searching for my first. Nice looking piece of wood despite the smushy stamps…. LOL
Thanks Jory! The stock has almost a reddish/ purplish hue under the right. I love the Suhl beech.

Thanks Paul! I was discussing the "v" I thought we saw, but it was an "r" ...gotta love sutterlin. Good to know we have a new high point for '16.

I agree-- I've been lucky (I've got a full set of 15-17 consortium with matching bolts), but you'll see a heck of a lot of rifles before you see a good Suhler; particularly '15s.

Good pickup Chris. For me, they were tough to find, at least decent ones. As I recall a matching one was the last Gew98 I acquired...
Thanks Mike!

Thanks for letting it go Alex. I appreciate you offering it.

I'll see what I can do 😉

Chris, high grade Suhl's (consortium) are hard to find matching and in upper grades... Mark Weiringa once stated they were very difficult and my research has borne this out.. they are some of the rarest wartime makers and were used up.

@AN-94 here you go-- quick and dirty group photo of all the 1916 roll mark makers. There were sterngewehr assemblers in 16 too; Erfurt, Spandau and Dresden. I'd need a 16 dated Dresden to complete the full 16 set.

Excellent pick up and thanks for the photos, Chris. Haenel was the last maker i needed for the maker set, but finding a good one took even longer. The dark finish on Suhler beech is quite distinct, i had a 1917 Sauer with very similar, albeit rougher, wood. https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/gewehr-98-j-p-sauer-1917-1620c.49424/
Thanks Cyrus-- I feel like I attract JPS and VCS rifles, but Haenel was the hardest of the Consortium for me. My last matching example from a maker was a Simson.

Thanks for the pic Chris, that's a wonderful collection of Gewehr 98s! I'm sure the right Dresden will come your way sooner or later to round out the set, what you have is a collection to aspire to!

That’s a sweet photo! Someday I will make it to see for myself😎

I found CGH the toughest too, though Mark said JPS was his challenge, though in my experience no more difficult than the others but VCS is no slouch in the difficulty department. Personally, I think it is a measure of perfection and or degree of originality that is the issue, all three can be found, if money isn't an issue, but perfection is near impossible for a Suhl (of course perfection is relative, you won't find a Suhl in the mint state of a dot/44 or byf/44..)

100%. I think the hardest part of stepping into imperial if you are used to k98k is moderating your standards. Being ok with minor mismatches, some patina, dents and dings etc.. is essential if you want to have more than just a handful of guns. I've got a decent number of beauty contest winners but there are plenty of ugly ducklings I'd never sell too.
