1912 Spandau Gew98

Here's one I picked up recently. It was from an online site I haven't used in years. Pictures weren't good but I had a feeling the disk when flipped would be regimental marked and it was, the good surprise. Unfortunately the ad stated the rifle was all visible numbers matching, which was not correct. The rear sight leaf & slide were mismatched, along with an unmarked buttplate. The really bad thing was the rifle was well wrapped like a mummy, but the bolt was left in the action. The bolt ball/handle had come through the box and the safety wing was broke off and I found it in the box. The auction house gave me a significant refund for the damage and incorrect description regarding matching #'s. The proofs are weak but not from stock sanding, most likely from water getting into them. Note the "W" on the far side of the rear sight leaf.

A very nice rifle, a new high for Spandau/12, though only a modest jump, all blocks are known with multiple reports for each block up to the "d" block. The RS acceptance, while my acceptance trends work is far complete, both Danzig and Erfurt used C/X acceptance during the war, late 1916 for Danzig, double suffix ranges through early 1917 production, then Erfurt seems to take it on in early 1917, though I am not sure how long into 1917...

Did you get a picture of the BC by chance?

I forgot to mention about the barrel code. It's obscured under most of the forward section of the rear sight.

That seems to happen a lot with Spandau & DWM, maybe too much wienerschnitzel at lunch or maybe Berlin's nightlife made them sloppy...

I know a reputable place that could repair that safety for you if you dont have someone that can fix it.

Great looking Spandau. Even if the stock cypher is weak the metal acceptance are strong and crisp. A great score, especially with the unit disc. There was a fraudulent Erfurt on Gunbroker some time aback that had a renumbered stock but it was also marked to the 1st Rseerve.

I think the rifle Cyrus mentions is a LR rifle sold last December, an Erfurt/03 "g" block, but Larry wasn't the first person to sell the rifle and it was not altered from the prior sale, at least so far as I can tell from the pictures (the original seller did few and lousy pictures). At least in LR's sale he showed the stocks internal serial being different (429), - my bet on examining stock acceptance stamps, that stocks wrist acceptance is a good match for Mike's Spandau/12 RR acceptance (his wrist stamp is not easy-clear to match up) and as I have learned though trends work, the wrist acceptance is the most consistent for matching to a maker.

Wow, pretty close for regimentals. Did you note from LR's auction if the buttplate exhibited depot rework/repair markings?

Here are the stocks shots
