I picked this one up locally at an auction this afternoon- Since I had it in hand and a little free time, I went ahead and photographed it.

This is a real time capsule that only saw minimal changes in its service life. Factory stock, triggerguard, barrel and bolt is a real gem to find on rifles this early.

Everything except the front band, rear screw and cleaning rod is matching. The rifle was updated for S. Patrone post 1903 and a 400m leaf installed, but that's about it. The bolt remains first pattern with the old style bolt body (narrow gas holes), firing pin (not reinforced) and cocking piece (sharp point on the underside). The rifle never had anything done that would have necessitated a firing proof to be added the the receiver. In addition, the condition remains untouched and well-maintained.

The buttplate has a #17 depot marking, but the work performed was likely very minor and might explain the mm front band and rear screw.

The stock disc is unit marked to the 65th Reserve Infantry Regiment, which saw significant service on the western front from 1914 on (as part of two different divisions). I won't expound more on that here, but a quick search on "65 Res" here will get you the full details. https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/55620/pg55620-images.html

The bolt and mag assembly had some clay/mud in them. I'm hoping this was original, because if someone was reenacting with this rifle, I'll need to have a frank discussion with them!

Interesting to note, our favorite Frenchman Guillaume-d'Orange posted another h-block last year marked to the 69th Infantry Regiment.

Outstanding Danzig, Chris! You rarely see a combination of this original and this nice. It’s a great one for research, so glad you got it!
Thanks Cyrus! The originality really drew me in on this one. Really comparable to that 03 Spandau from last year.

That’s a beauty and local…. Can’t beat that
Thanks Jory-- local is usually pretty dry here, but every once in a while....

Such awesome condition for as early as this is.
Very cool early bolt!
Thanks Rick! This one held up extremely well considering it was issued to a regiment that took some heavy losses at times. It was really a lucky gun.

wow... love seeing them in this type of condition !!! congrats ! One of the nicest Gew's Ive seen posted in some time.

Congrats, that's a beauty for being 1902 and with minimal updates to boot! You don't see a lot of those early bolts floating around these days or even early receivers that nice for that matter. Gotta love it when you can find gems like that locally, I'm still waiting for the day I find a matching WMO Gewehr 98 that nice at all.

Excellent pickup!
Thanks Mike! I figured you'd approve!

Thanks! It was love at first sight when I saw it at the auction. Haha
That’s a pretty incredible local find! Congrats!
Thanks Nathaniel-- the early feature ones are some of my favorites.

Thanks! Keep looking, a nice 16 WMO wouldn't be too heavy of a lift. Just be ready to pounce when you see it.

Great find Chris, thanks for posting and the great pics! I have a 1915 DWM marked to the same regiment (and one marked to the 69th!)

thanks, Nick

Thanks Nick!

Excellent P08-- If you ever get tired of it, I know a place really close to you that would make a good home 🤣
