1895 Spandau Gew 88

Trying to determine what to do with this rifle...

1895 Spandau

Had quite a bit of pitting along the woodline, and after taking it out of the stock, it's pretty bad. There are a number of pinholes and a lot of pitting on the barrel shroud. There are three places where someone at some time attempted to solder up a pinhole.

There are no Turk marks anywhere.

The receiver is not notched front or back.

The rear sight is the original 88 ladder, retains the short range leaf. It is missing the slider. Serial mismatch to rifle.

There are sanding marks on the stock, and there are no external proofs visible. There are a couple very old trench art letters in script. The barrel channel has a serial number visible that I think matches the action screws.

The trigger guard s/n doesn't match anything else.

The bolt matches itself except the safety, and has a bolt head.

The bands match each other and lower is marked K.F.R. 9.234. (Kaiser Franz Garde-Grenadier Regiment #2)

The barrel is the thicker, more gradual profile, is imperial proofed, and serial matches. Bore is in good condition.

This rifle is a mixmaster, but the wear is very even across the entire gun - it's been this way a long time.

Trying to decide if I should keep together or part it out.

Pete, I'd say that's up to you, but if the bore is good, probably would be a good shooter you won't feel bad lugging around and using heavily. Just my 2 cents

I would try to sell that one complete before parting it out. 88's are hard to part out, there are several parts that you'll have to near give away, and a few "high dollar" parts, but typically I have found that a good solid 88 with a good bore is worth more as a complete gun than the sum of its parts.

I'm not close enough to the market, where's ballpark value sit on this as it stands?
