Picked up this Amberg Gew 88 commission rifle a week or so ago. Finally got around to snapping some pictures and giving it a thorough takedown.

It’s been reworked several times at different depots. Looks like it was last reworked at depot 5, and at depot 11 before that. It is unit marked to the 13th ersatz. The firing pin is likely a Turk replacement as the original was most likely clipped. It has a leather sling, but I can’t tell if it’s original or a reproduction. It’s marked “69” and “AE” as pictured. The bore is incredibly nice for its age.

Nice first Gewehr 88 buddy! And like I told you I have a feeling the original firing pin was clipped. I'll try to find you a proper German proof marked replacement. By the way does your bolt head match by chance?

It does not. Not in finish or number

Looks good man! I remember this one on Broker. Glad someone here got it! Decent Amberg 88s aren't very easy to find. The sling is a great thing to have too. That's another $2-300 bonus on a rifle you already did pretty well on.

Koblenz rework, the stock SN was added there most likely. I have a couple with similar numbers added to the stock. One from Thorn and another from one of the high number depots. This appears to have been the SOP with 88s, though not with 71/84 for some reason.

Congrats again!

The stock does match. The serial number was stamped on the inside of the stock.

Hopefully I can get some proper ammo and give it a test fire at some point.

I was more saying the external SN on the stock was added at a depot. Factory 88 stocks were only numbered internally. External numbers on the keel only show up on depot reworks.

These are a blast to shoot. IMO one of the most underrated rifles of the era.
