$17 K98 1943

Hi, brand new member. I was with my dad when he bought this rifle. Sitting at a local bar in WI - it must have been the late 70's, I was a teen. The owner showed my dad the rifle and my dad gave him $17 for it. I remember the amount because it seemed really cheap. I thought the long range sight was really cool. I don't think he ever shot it. Years later a good friend of my brother's was visiting and my dad gave him the Mauser. Reportedly he tried it out and it shot really well. My dad is long gone and my brother's friend recently passed on. I was talking to my brother and his friend had returned the rifle to him several years ago. I asked my brother for some photos and here is what he sent. I have no idea why the stock has that ugly notch cut out but otherwise the condition seems like it's still pretty good from the pics. He will get me some more pics later today. I told him it was likely fairly valuable but I really have no idea. My dad had another Mauser that is still in the family. It was sporterized and he shot some nice deer with it around the 1950 time frame. I included a pic of my dad with one of those deer mounts.10286739_10203878872475120_8384749143186695390_o.jpg

No bad for 17 bucks. Yeah the stock is a mystery. Does the serial number on the stock match the reciever? Its possible the stock came off another sporterized rifle with a butchered mount of some kind.

Shame about the stock, the rifle is a JP Sauer K98k made in 1943 using a receiver from Erma/Feima. Is there any numbers or markings on the side or underside of the stock?

He sent some more pics. I didn't remember it being this "sporterized, but then again I haven't seen it in many years.
(The "attach files" feature worked a lot better than "Insert image")

The stock is pretty much firewood at this point. Unfortunately looks like the flange on the rear sight that retains the hand guard has also been ground off.

Thanks for the replies guys. This is a nice forum. Yeah, too bad the stock was butchered. Probably not as valuable as the Marlin .410 lever action he got for $15 back in the day. That's okay, we're not going to sell any of them anyhow.

One subgroup of my collection is Bubba stocks... Wish I had yours to add.

Here's my pride/joy (with fine checkering too)
