Alright… lets see what you sniper guys think about this one. Listed as a PU conversion of a bcd43. These aren’t something I know much about at all… but my gut feeling leans positive.

What do you guys think?

For one the Mount & Base has been shortened from it original length . I have seen this rifle before another forum member wanted MO and that of members opinion , I did not like it then and like it even less now seeing who the seller is .

Glad I got my Posen depot build rifle away from that dude.

Is that seller a humper? Or is he just shady in how he aquires things?

Brazing as a means of securing the mount base? I don't think a German armorer would do that. Certainly an armorer would have that skillset but highly unlikely he would resort to brazing. That's a lot of heat on the receiver. Absent any documentation showing the modification, dubious would be an understatement.

PU Mounts & Bases were a dime a dozen the Germans would not have to go to this extreme to build a Sniper rifle , specially using a PU Mount & Base that has been altered . Also as pointed out they would not permanently affix the base in this manor .

I will be interested to see what price this Turd sells for and who the hell would buy such a POS .

I'm very far from a sniper guy but there is some evidence of there at least being experiments done in this direction:
(no source on the pic, unfortunately, just one I've had since running across it online years ago)

potential PU on K98k.jpg

That said, I agree that this is suspect as all hell and almost certainly fake. Mostly because I can't think of anything else like this that was done with braising.

There are enough period pictures that proof field made K98k rifles with various Soviet scopes and even scope mounts. However, these were never standard and are always super tough to impossible to verify. Some Soviet capture K98k rifles with welded up holes confirm they existed. The only one that I have ever believed in to have the original base was a ground dug rifle that I purchased from the Netherlands. Going back to the rifle in question, I would not see any sense as to why they would use a modified base and mount. Makes no sense to do the additional alteration in the field.

I probably know less about these than almost anyone, but after finding the auction & reading not only the description but also his ‘additional terms of sale’ my radar says !BS! There’s too much story, too frantically hyperbolic.
That such things may have been made for real in the field wouldn’t surprise me, I just don’t think this is one.

There is a Russian document which mentions the Russians installing PU scopes on 98k’s to use as trainers for Soviet snipers. @RyanE mentioned it once? But this rifle is a terrible attempt to make something we know existed imo.

The GAU (similar to the WaA) ordered 100 in mid 1943 for testing. It isn't exactly clear why, but they may have been considering ways to increase sniper production. The Russians were probably sitting on large numbers of K98k after Stalingrad.

Some may have ended up at the main sniper school (also not clear) possibly as training rifles.

Imo, unless the collector discussion was on here and is linked, I call BS unless it's a recognized name and there is proof.
Yeah, it was not... but he has had it approved lol like 100% fam. I can 100% assure you that this is a REAL DEAL K98 sniper! ;)

Why? Because the discussions I've had, that you WON'T SEE, say so!

LOL!!! Reminds me of Buckeye190 saying that humped bnz 4 "Kurmark" rework that I won on GB for 2,500 was legit. He told me on the phone after I had raised questions of the authentication from Cyrus or Sam Moore and mentioned karabiner 98k not showing any examples that matched. Buckeye190 told me "I know Bruce, he's looked at it and said it was legit"
LMAO sure thing fucktard, if ya really knew him then why did you go on a full house rant complaining that Bruce and Steven book were costing you a ton of money.....while Bruce was standing behind you listening to every word. Ya think if he actually knew Bruce, he would have noticed him standing there 🤔🧐🤣😬

Yea that was pretty amusing hearing this guy go on a rant about Mike and I and here I was just 4 feet away just listening - major LOL.
I still hope he screws off and gets a hobby in planting or something. He has no business being anywhere near collectible rifles. He needs to fire sale them off and never look back at the K98K or any collectible military rifle.
