The auction is finished. It looked like a nice closet find with a hefty final price!! I know these are not easy to find and I never realized they were worth that kinda coin.
G29/40 on Gunbroker. A battle of the wallets!

Now, for actual content, I think the buyer might have gotten hosed. Not on the gun itself, but on the price. If you look at the bid history the person who won it showed interest up through about $2500 with other bidders, then a NR bidder pushed things all the way up to $5700. NR bidder that registered in 2021 throws up my shill bidding alarm in a pretty big way.

Ah, didn't know. Well, sorry if I offended anyone. It's just a pattern that throws up alarm bells for me.

Hey Bruce... yes I see the N on the disc.. On a side note.. the rifle I was looking at yesterday and was telling you about was the same type of thing. 660 1940 a block with blank side rail.. had a 39 dated barrel oddly enough this one is earlier no letter with 29/40 markings with a 40 dated barrel. The one I mention was Eagle/H marked very faint with 0.##### fleet marking..
The auction rifle here is in its "natural state" nice with un-messed with wood ect.. Price seems a little high but, than again one might have to wait 20 years to find another and we aint getting any younger !! You can always make more money.. they aren't making these rifles any longer.

Good fight Bruce and I'm glad it went to someone in the community. I agree, it went high, well over my initial intended budget. But as so often happens in auctions, I got sucked in a bit and decided to fight it out. Those who know me know I'm into Steyr rifles, so this one would have been a pretty sweet add to the collection. Something I really wanted. As others have said, not an easy gun to find, and I noticed it was a diverted KM rifle too
. But at the end of the day I'm a younger guy...and a realized after $5k I was being pretty dumb lol.
Bruce, please send my best wishes to the new owner. And hopefully he'll post some better pics of it one day too!

Nothing to really be ashamed of IMHO.. we are all adults who work hard for their money and should be able to spend it as they see fit.. Also Money and wealth is a sliding scale. 100 bucks to one guy is like a grand to another depending on how much they have. Makes it unfair sometimes for the little guy to win. But, that aside I was having the same discusssion with Bruce about price and the "old hats" of the hobby bark and scarf at prices paid sometimes.. If either bidder had posted on the trader " will pay top dollar for a KM marked 29/40" crickets would be heard.. So thats why auctions like this occur.. This is nothing new.. Consider the time, travel and miles spent show hopping to find this gun.. You could spend many thousands looking and still may never come across one.. My2 cents

We've all been there buddy. Sometimes you have to put the money up! That's how it was with that 98b at the SOS show I bought. Chances of me finding another example like that, well probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Fair market value and book value are two different things. We like to pay book value but the market is an open competition ground and this one was legitimately hard fought.

If it's a code you want and have been waiting to find? Price is subjective. I've paid large for bSw's.
Steyr 1940 rifles are not easy to get so that's number 1.
Number 2 is the fact that the rifle is a G29/40 variant and while it looks like a K98k, the Germans did not consider it the same rifle believe or not.
Last the rifle is actually a Kriegsmarine issue gun and its matching and not dicked with.
Adding it up and you have the trifecta!
While condition was not mint this rifle will present well when cleaned up.
I am certainly not a fan of the price which was exorbitant, but that's between the two bidders.
