Expert Gut Check - 1939 Russian Capture

Just purchased this Russian captured K98 from Simpsons and I wanted to see what everyone’s thoughts were on the price. Obviously it’s been redone and reblued, but I think it’s still a fair deal.

I wanted one of the Portuguese M937As from Atlantic but I think I missed the train on them.

Didn't do too bad on that price these days. R/Cs running $6-800. A little cheaper would have been better. Make for a great shooter.

That looks great, at todays price you did OK. I see you got a repro cleaning rod, sling, and capture screws with the rifle. That appears to be a high quality, At The front .Com upper end repro. sling-not Chinese made garbage. So you did fine. Import mark? Barrel condition? No counter bore? No nasty import mark on the receiver. See my review of some of mine below. All markings intact, no pinged dirty birds. (y) At a Wi gun show that would have $800-900 on it. You do not see these at shows ...

The sling looks to be post war Stg 58 surplus item. Good quality sling, but slightly longer than K98k sling.

Looks like no bargain, but you could do a lot less well on that site... just a quick pass through inventory (I saw nothing better) suggests about as good a deal as possible if restricted to these fellows, but it reminds me of my first car purchase in Santa Ana where i signed the paper work and the next day when I picked up the Pontiac Firebird, the ac compressor was gone... but they threw in a baldly spare... but they measured their sucker right and I wanted wheels bad enough I drove off in search of a six pack...

You could do better on Gunbroker imo.

Not bad. A bit higher than the best deal you could get, but not terribly so. No capture X that I can see, intact markings, clean gun.

in 4th pic of listing page, you can see 1/2 of the “X” on the receiver just above the date, like part of it was buffed out….

The RC crossed rifle X is looking like a V, lightly off stamped. A good many appear as such. Ivan had a light touch. However, it does have the RC "X" One nice rifle. Please see the TB link for more examples in the Russian capture attribute section on page one.

I gotta say I really appreciate the input from everyone on this. I’m new to collecting Mausers, but I really have enjoyed learning about the stories histories of these weapons.

This forum is a great resource.

Either that stock has been refinished stateside, or that’s the best looking Russian shellac I’ve ever seen on a K98. Looks like good surface adhesion and no chipping. Very nice looking example overall. 👍
