Purchasing my first K98

I'm just a little south of the OP in Leduc, AB. That swp45 seems to be priced well. Double check the front of the stock as it seems to have some damage between the sling band and front band. (From his pics on CGN).. I've been eyeing that one up myself for a while now... glad you picked it up before I spent my money! Lol

Check in with Milarm and P&D in Edmonton for 8mm ammo. Canadian Tire usually carries 8mm too, but be prepared for sticker shock!!! Or check out the next Edmonton GunShow at the Pavillion in Stoney Plain in December. There's always some 8mm ammo there too. Cheers!
 
Hey guys! The gun finally came in. Took quite a while even though I paid for extra shipping but what can ya do.

I've only got 3 pictures of it currently, I will upload more after I shoot it. The owner gave me a couple days to try it out so I spent the bulk of the night last night cleaning it, and am gonna head to the farm today to fire some shots off. I picked up 20 rounds of soft point for 48 bucks, and then found some surplus on sale 240 rounds for 250 bucks. Non-corrosive.

The only thing that was in rough shape on the rifle was the floor plate and trigger guard. I had a hard time getting it out of the stock and eventually had to take a punch to the front screw hole to get it to come out. It was fairly rusted up and coated with cosmoline. I used some Hoppe's and a flat blade screwdriver to get most of it off so it would fit in and out easily. Secondly, which I am kind of angry at myself for is I attemped to take the butt plate off. First screw came out easily but the second one(the one on top) was so rusted I ended up snapping the screw in the stock. I now have to try and find a way to extract it from the stock and am looking on Ebay for some butt plate screws. There are lots of them, but i assume with shipping that is going to be a 30 dollar fix :facepalm:.

One question, do I really need to worry about the cosmoline lodged in the floor plate and on the stock underneath the barrell? My buddy insists that cosmoline is actually my friend, and any amount of it that does not effect the firing of the rifle(which has all been cleaned off by the previous owner) actually wouldn't be harmful to just stay on. The stock still has cosmoline on it, can tell just by smelling my hands after I hold the thing. Any easy way to get that off or should I just leave it?

The rifling on it is in amazing shape. It looked pretty dirty at first just from sitting around but after I cleaned the thing I was super happy to see that it is in near mint condition. I think I got a fairly good price on this rifle.

You'd be a little bit north. Strathmore is about 25 miles east of Calgary. The 8mm ammo is pricey, I'm glad I found some NC surplus.
 
Just got back from firing. Man are these guns awesome. Amazes me that 70+ years later these are still efficient shooters.

The only problem I had, and I'm not sure if it's just this gun, or the K98s in general is the bolt kind of gets sticky at the top when you are trying to eject a casing. It goes smooth to nearly the top then you need to give it that extra push for it to go all the way up before you can pull back. Is this normal? And if not, is it fixable?

Brain fart on my part. For some reason I thought you said you were in Edmonton... ;)

8mm Surplus non corrosive...??? What's on the headstamp of the cartridge? If it's 8mm Surplus, there is not much that is non corrosive. Most stuff in Alberta will be 50's Yugo, Romanian, and a smattering of WW2 German and old Turk stuff.

Polishing your chamber will usually help with a sticky bolt, but sometimes the mismatched parts on an RC or the ammo you are using may cause that too.

Breaking a screw off in any rifle is a royal pain in the rear... I usually leave buttplates, stock discs, bayonet lugs, and recoil lugs alone in a K98 unless I absolutely have to take them out for a reason.

I can check my parts bin later when I get home from the farm to see if I have any spare buttplate screws.

I got the ammo from a place called Things Military in Calgary. Here is a link to the ammo I bought, doesn't say much except that its FMJ Non Corrosive. https://www.thingsmilitary.com/ammunition/8mm-mauser-fmj-240rds-only-249.95/. The guy knew his stuff, like the place was absolutely littered with K98 accessories. Actually had some of the original cleaning kits as well, they looked pretty beat up and one even had a name scratched into it. I woulda bought one if he didn't want 80 bucks haha. Anyways, he claimed the ammo was non corrosive, and I got 240 rounds for 250 bucks(he had it on sale from 320 for 240 rounds). The guy was very knowledgeable and I doubt he would be trying to stiff me to get a sale. I will see if I can get the info on the headstamp but I left the gun and ammo out at the farm.
 
Good 'ol "Nazi Bill" at Things Military eh..?

Sounds like he has some of that re-primed Romanian Surplus that Canada Ammo brought in this year. It's apparently had the corrosive primers replaced with non corrosive. I haven't bought any yet, so it very well could be good stuff.

Oh, I also happened to have 1 of those buttplate screws! PM me your mailing address and I'll send it out to you.
