What can you all tell me about this Zielsechs I bid on on a whim and ended up winning through Germansniper1 on Ebay:

Please excuse the dog hair. My camera died and I didn't have time to retake these after I noticed the hair in the pics.

Also, where can I find some literature on centering the reticle, zeroing, what the various knobs and turny-bits do, etc. I'm very experienced with optics, just not of this configuration and I'd rather not screw this piece up.

Thanks for the help!

not sure if that's the guy to avoid on ebay or not?? Vaughn99 is the guy who will know.

I think its prewar. The name could be the owner or the gun smith or Distributor ??

Interesting. He was recommended to me by a collector on another board and a quick google search of his Ebay name gives other recommendations. Have dealt with him in the past and all went well. He didn't claim the scope to be anything other than what was shown in the pics on the ad but did claim that Willi Karl was a reknowned gunsmith in Germany. Another Google search found over-under shotguns with this engraving. At that point I felt the scope was ok, but I also know these things can be faked.

Hello,

your scope was made in the 1921/22 calender year. it is 1 of 312 made that year. this is a real zeiss and they placed the markings on the early scope like yours. for a small fee zeiss would put your name as a gunsmith or business on the scope this had to be pre-ordered like this and you had to buy a minimum each year. Emil Kerner was another who used this option but is seen more commonly. Holger is a very reputable guy i WISH his shipping prices were lower but I just figure that in with my bidding. other than that I have bought over 20 scopes from him and all were as described and shipped promptly

OK, I was right about the scope but wrong about the guy.. There are a number of scope peddlers on ebay. The Czech guy is the one to avoid then.

There is a few more notorious Fakers , Hucksters & Fraudsters , one is from Italy a Japanese guy (Hashimoto) this is one of the better known sellers . When its a Czech seller I consider it suspect from the beginning . Best Regards

Does anyone have any manuals or literature that explains what does what on this scope? Specifically what each "click" of elevation measures at what distance, how much elevation there is, etc. I'd love to get the reticle centered and know which knob to adjust when I go to zero it and ideally not screw this almost century old piece up.

Hello,

the big dial on the top that looks like diamond is your focus adjustment. the thumb screw locks the elevation, make sure this screw is away from the elevation dial to avoid damage. the elevation dial is the ring with the knurling 360 degrees. there is NO click adj on these it is the old smooth feel adj. there is a lot of min and max adj and no worries there are stops in the scope for min and max. to go the range, adj elevation till you are on target were you want then lock the thumb screw and now scribe a line on your elevation dial were the triangle is on your saddle in front of the thumb screw. these dial were blank when new unless you specified other were blank. if you have any lines or markings present some one just marked were it was needed for there rifle at the time.
