WaA103 marked High Power

Just got this Pistole 640(b) delivered today. It's a WaA103 marked example (including magazine). I believe the SN range would put this one in 1942 production. These are such beautiful looking guns, especially with the tangent sight.

Question for you guys. I've read in a few places that these were often issued to the Waffen SS and Fallschirmjäger units. Some say the majority of them. Does anyone know of any actual documentation of this? And if so, what is the reason?

I’ve read/heard the same. My Hi-power allegedly came off an SS soldier, but buy the piece not the story. I bought it from the vet’s nephew who had a detailed story and some vague information in a couple lesser known published books to back it up. He had the capture document too, but wife allegedly threw it away when it was sitting on the table a few days before we met up thinking it was garbage.

That's a shame about the capture papers! One thing I have read online was an excerpt from Terry Gander's book "Germany's Infantry Weapons 1939-1945"

"After 1940, the High Power remained in production as the 9mm P 640(b), almost all production going direct to the Waffen SS; at least 319,000 pistols were included."

I don't own this book or know how good the information is, but I'm curious where he got this info from. He sounds pretty certain for something that apparently hasn't had a clear answer over the years.

I had read something similar. Waffen SS and Fals received the better, high capacity Hi-powers as they were a more elite soldier so deserved better and all the others went to the other units. Whether there is truth in it or it’s an old gun show legend is up for debate I suppose.
