Very late K98 bolt . . . .

Hello everyone . . . .

I just joined up here, and have a question (one that has probably been asked before).

In Lud Olsen's Mauser book, he says the very late (1945, I guess) K98's were made WITHOUT a bolt guide rib. (The rib that turns down under the extractor).

After 54 years of playing with these . . . and other . . . . rifles, I've yet to see a '98 bolt WITHOUT said rib.

Have I just been "zigging" when the rifle was "zagging"?

Can anybody post a pic of a '98 bolt WITHOUT this rib?

Also, if such a rifle DOES exist, did the underside of the receiver bridge have the slot for the rib eliminated?

TIA, --Jim

As far as I know they never eliminated the bolt guide channel in the rear receiver bridge (doing so would have prevented the rifle from being reworked using an earlier bolt). I don't think the bolts without the guide rib are particularly common.

Here are two of mine. I see them all the time, but I pretty much exclusively collect late war production guns.

The channel in the receiver was not eliminated as mentioned above it would have prevented the use of an earlier style bolt both in production or in rebuilds.

Some of the Czech assembled/made post-war 98K's have these "non-ribbed" bolts.
Leftover parts maybe?

Seems like I recall a post on some late bolts that were made with a rib, but had them machined off!
