Strange SS marked sight stamping on 1940 42 Mauser

Hello all, first time poster with a question but I’m very familiar to the forum here as an observer. I picked this k98 up today at the Show of Shows and was looking over all the markings. It is a mismatched Mauser 42 from 1940, probably a Soviet rework and it’s all wartime mismatches. However under the rear sliding sight it has a couple strange SS stamps on it I have never seen before. Anyone know what they could mean besides or see them before? Think it could really be SS? Thanks.

It means the sight base is for sS ammo . The very first rifles had sights for S ammo , but the base can be changed for sS ammo .

That barrel is a depot replacement barrel as well based on the barrel code being a rather well known depot spare barrel supplier, the other supporting notice of it being a depot spare is the lack of a visible barrel gauge marking (i.e. factory gauge marking at the 12 o clock shoulder position) any where on the shoulder. That rear sight sleeve I believe came from a Gewehr 98M since the new sight sleeves put on those were typically marked Patronen S.s which is the 198 grain service round.

I noticed that too. '41 dated barrel on a 1940 build. I can also see the very faint droop wing/46 on that sight ramp which I thought was pretty neat.
