I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there were some bad things done to that rifle. The piece you're referring to is a scope base for an objective mount optic. However, you only have the rear one, the front one would cover the receiver ring and the "42/1939". You also have the stock that looks like someone attempted to relieve it for zf41 mount. And to crown it all off, the top of the barrel was ground flat as well. Someone had a hell of a time grinding that flat on.
The flat spot in front of the receiver looks like a 1/2 round block soldered to the barrel ( I hope). It should be removable. Hopefully you didn’t spend too much. Please post pictures of all the serially numbered parts and pictures of both sides of the whole rifle, a link to the past auction is ok if the pictures are still available.
I see what you mean for sure. It’s my first one I didn’t expect it to be perfect as with my Garand that was re arsenaled in the 50’s. I had figured it was some type of scope mount but I couldn’t find any pictures of it myself. Can I just take that mount off the gun? Obviously it will still have the tap holes but I’m assuming it’s not a permanently affixed mount. Here’s a couple more pics of that barrel issue you mentioned.

Definitely and thanks for the advice! Up until this point (other than my P38) I’ve mostly collected American firearms so that’s where my knowledge lies. This is my first dip into German war time rifles. I admit I may have jumped the gun on this one as out of the other 15 98’s they had, this was the sole one without import markings which completely turns me off.

Would you be able to give me an example of what the stock should look like for future reference? Tried to do some research on the stamps but every k98 I see seems like it has a different shade of wood so I’m not sure exactly how to tell.
Good rule of thumb, no original stock will have serials in the butt stock.
Ah I see. That’s where my confusion lies as with what I’ve collected so far, American WWII firearms, the stocks are almost always marked with a whole host of different stamps.
