Looks to be a newly (2015-ish) added rail with a repro mount. I'd like to see more of the rifle itself though. She's rough, but still eye candy.

I noticed no corrosion on the rail

A shame someone added a reproduction rail to an original rifle. The mount is also reproduction, as are the bands and the screws.

That's a new made rail. I build such rails some years ago and will make some this year again.
I made them for the GSG-STG44 in .22lr, but they fit the originals as well.

The rail can be glued on the receiver with a good epoxy. This works well and is removable with a little heat and acetone.

You are right, it is a shame. But where to get an original rail when your eyes get older?

Well. Getting older does not include allowance to kill a MP44 .
