Seems to me that there should be an Depot eagle stamped on the wood somewhere, otherwise it appears to be a approx. 1937 rifle in approx. 1942 replacement stock.

I would say a 33-34 Banner in a later stock. Looks like might be the original bands.

The 1933 and 1934 Banner rifles would not have Standard Modell on the sidewall, they would have the Mauser address. I would think it is one of the late production Standard-Models that had their bolts turned down at the factory, and cut outs added to the stock. I have one close to this serial number that is a bolt mismatch, but it is in a walnut stock with bolt cut out numbered to the rifle. Unfortunately it has been sporterized.
If this rifle was a factory modified rifle I would expect it to be in a walnut stock numbered to match. Perhaps the stock was replaced in service, I don't know enough about Mauser fonts used internally on stocks to suggest it is factory,or perhaps it is a post war addition.

Some of the late Standard Modells in this serial range had a single e/63 on the receiver indication military acceptance. mine does not, and it does not appear this one does either.

I would like to hear others opinions, but I think that at least the bolt and barreled receiver are correct as they left the factory.

Compare it with this one: http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?36407-Mauser-Standard-Modell-K98k-Short-Side-Rail-Conversion

This rifle is very closeby in serial and still has its matching stock.

The only thing that gives me pause about the OPs rifle is the stock. I would expect to see it still in its original walnut stock, and bottom mounted sling attachments, or the original stock
with bottom swivel mount filled, and modified to K98k style side mounted sling.

What do others thinkable about the numbers stamped into the stock channel and hand guard?

Also, are there any sn on the barrel bands,
any sign of the sling retaining hook having been ground of the upper band?

Does the handguard have any markings in it? Any markings on the bayonet lug when looking at it from front? You didn't picture the full buttplate, are there any markings on the very bottom that you didn't show?

Answers to everyone's questions - There is no signs of the a hook being ground off the front band, both bands are unnumbered, handguard is unnumbered, there is nothing else stamped on the butt plate other then what is shown in the picture and the only mark on the bayonet lug is a + on it.

Chuck

From the ink stain and cloth fibers in the barrel channel it looks like someone removed the green ink, stamped numeral, who knows why?
Also am I wrong, or does the cleaning rod hole in the bayonet lug look like the large VZ/24 rod hole.
I'd like to see the stock numbers under the buttplate to date the stock.

I used a blue cue stick chalk and rub it in the channel and wipe it out to try and bring out the serial numbers better.
