Spandau G98 w/naval disk

I see Reisel's got another Gew98 for sale online, except this one's had a KM (naval) disk added, not original to the rifle. Someone did a poor job removing the old disk. Also, the disk is upside down. It's already up there in price & hopefully no one here falls for the Kaiserliche Marine connection.....

Yes, Dave's forum linked it yesterday, was thinking of saying the same thing, - it is a shame they did that to the rifle, it looks pretty nice otherwise, original stock and bolt, which isn't real easy to find on a 1916, but this one is very late for a 16, probably the beginning of the last third of 1916 production (Spandau made a lot of G98's in 1916, very few in 1917, and none in 1918)

I guess someone couldn't help himself and had to take a perfectly nice rifle and make it "rare", - too bad he didn't bother to do any research at all. (not saying LR did it, I doubt he did, but it is a shame all the same)

You can post a link Mike, if you have it handy, - if you want too, technically it is a humper and we wouldn't want someone here getting stuck with it for a KM price (it would be a decent rifle for a reasonable price, stock has a few minor problems but is quite decent)

Not quite so fast... the disc is reversed; entirely possible somebody popped it to see what was on the underside and put it back incorrectly. I'd like to see the other side to see if it is unit marked and if it shows the same amount and degree of exposure that the rest of the piece shows... Smelly perhaps, but not necessarily flushable.

I disagree, just a KM this late is extremely unlikely, most KM G98's end by 1906, only a handful after (1907 & 1908) and most newer (1909-1915) are oddballs in Jeff Noll's book (only reports), almost all legit known are DWM or Erfurt made rifles, and that it is on a wartime made G98 is all the more suspicious.

I find the rifle extremely unlikely to be authentic, as much as anything because it is so late, wartime and that nothing supports its authenticity. However, if you think it is correct and are bidding on the rifle, let me know. I will pull the thread until it is over.

Taken, - anyone else and i would have scoffed at the notion, but if you think it might be authentic, then who knows... I still seriously doubt it but no one knows more than you do and collectors should take that into consideration.

Craig is correct that since the disk exhibits no proof marking it's flipped, so it's a possibility, but slim imho.

...."no one knows more than you do"... Claptrap, if I may say so. Everybody here is learning all the time; we are all students, some more advanced than others but nobody - nobody - knows it all.

I didn't think you were infallible, had I, I wouldn't have disagreed with you... just some collectors deserve to be taken more serious than others.
